Oh man I'm disappointed. Such poor writing, and no chemistry between characters. For the character to constantly tell us how much of a badass warrior she was, she seemed to cry every freaking chapter. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with emotional characters, but it did not fit with the stereotype they kept trying to push onto the character as a cold/badass warrior viking. Ugh so disappointed with this book.

I enjoy Adrienne Young's writing. The world building is always simple so it never detracts from the story. Her small world stories keep me engaged, and I appreciate it. I loved the action scenes in this book, and I was hooked right away. I wasn't sure where it was going, but I enjoyed the ride.
I do feel the opportunity to build more suspense was missed by a swift ending. I believe the final battle or preparations for it could have been drawn out more or given more detail.
I wish there was more to the romance that developed. It fell a little flat with a character that appeared to have more depth, but I never got to see it.
Overall I found the story action packed and heartwarming. I would definitely recommend.

The Aska live in the fjords. Eelyn is an Aska warrior, and they are in a perpetual blood feud with the Riki from the mountains. They war with one another according to the season, and no one ever wins. The Herja are invaders from the sea. The Herja killed Eelyn's mother when she was a child, and the Riki killed her brother 5 years ago. Eelyn hates these tribes with her whole being and lives to serve her god in taking vengeance. One day on the battlefield Eelyn sees her dead brother. Was he real, or was he a spirit sent by her god to protect her? Then when Eelyn is captured by the Riki her entire world is turned upside down, and she may need to make allies of the people she has sworn to hate

I'm not sure if the Aska, Riki, and Herja or their gods are just fantasy names for vague Viking-esque storytelling and world building, and that made it take on a little bit of a fantasy flavor for me. This story does have some rather gruesome violence in it, but the majority of this story deals with relationships. It is a rather wholesome story of family, mending fences, forgiveness, misplaced loyalty, and recovery of loss. I think this would be appropriate for a more mature YA reader.

This may be my favorite of Adrienne Young's books. I shed several tears. I loved it.
