This book achieves what the title implies: an introduction to a complex topic. An excellent starting off point for those looking to learn more.

By the time the war ended, Britain had put her signature on a confusing array of promises and declarations. She had pledged the future disposition of Palestine to no less than three different real or imagined allies. First, Britain’s high commissioner in Egypt, Sir Henry McMahon, made promises to Sharif Husayn, the Hashemite ruler of the Hijaz region of Arabia, about the creation of an independent Arab kingdom. Secondly, Britain officially recognized the long-standing claims of her French allies to Syria, while staking claims of her own. Third, promises were made to Zionist leaders in London. A fourth set of commitments, spurred by US President Woodrow Wilson, was broadcast about the rights of all peoples to independence and self-determination.

I knew it all began with cold, callous Imperialism and Colonialism, and as expected, learning the details has pissed me off. I’m re-reading this and other literature on the subject and I’m trying to be mindful of authorial biases. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/927553035 details instances of Bunton’s flowery word choice when describing instances of supposed land ownership and other strange or inaccurate language. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1748101229 offers further recommendations for deeper reading and praise for Bunton’s succinctness and transparency.

I found the summary-by-year in the end very enlightening. I’m reading this again with a highlighter and my eyes wide open.

At the end of this interesting book I can't help but think that some many opportunities have been missed, but that none on them would have actually worked even if they had be acted on.

Complex to say the least.

Thorough overview of the complicated history of this conflict. It reads like a history book and the audiobook can be hard to follow sometimes with so many names and dates, though this may be necessar  to gain a broader understanding of what has happened in the region. It's painful hearing how small groups of extremists and/or very powerful people make it so difficult for there to be lasting peace.
