The emotional trauma of this one is strong, but it’s also a sweet story at its heart. Full review to come!

I'll be honest, I didn't enjoy this at all. I cannot believe this is a book handed to children, or that we're worried about two dudes kissing when this book actually contains a child getting split open with an axe??

What I mean about the book not being diverse is just that it’s really only about 1 boy and his two dogs, and his family sometimes. So not overall racist, but not super diverse either.

This is the first book I remember truly sobbing during reading.

My whole family enjoyed this book, me (34F), my husband (36M), our daughter (9F) and our son (6M). We listened to it on Audible on road trips. I read this book as a kid also and loved it then.

A beautiful book I first read in elementary school. As an adult, I sobbed just as hard as I did as a kid (even already knowing the story). Rawls was a fascinating dude and wrote an incredible book that should be widely read. The realities of growing up in very rural areas in the mid-twentieth century are so removed from my own life that I find them fascinating. I'd be curious to know how those who had similar upbringings react to this book.
