Dubliners by James Joyce

The women are frustrated, the men are drunkards, and nothing happens. Against this bleak backdrop, Joyce introduces a litany of  tragic figures for good measure. Some of the storytelling is particularly fine but unfortunately the emotional tension simmering beneath the surface and occasional self-reflective epiphany were insufficient to keep me engaged when paired with a plotless plot and pathetic but otherwise unremarkable characters. The ending of The Dead is good though.

“One by one they were all becoming shades. Better pass boldly into that other world, in the full glory of some passion, than fade and wither dismally with age.”

Read this for my English class.
I definitely wouldn't have picked this out for myself to read but I really enjoyed it! Professor did a pretty good job at analyzing and explaining it to us, or else I wouldn't have understood many of the references and how it related to the stories.

Some stories were interesting enough, while the others were such a drag and bore
