Well damn, I read more than half this book in the last two days and it was really hard to put down. Normally I’m not a huge fan of this type of book but I really came to appreciate it and all that was in it once I got into the second half. Definitely pulled on my heart strings in a lot of good ways but also some bad ways. That being said, characters aren’t made specifically for me to like hahah. I really liked this book and would recommend to anyone, even if this isn’t particularly your thing, because it isn’t really mine either.

Very beautifully written. I think a lot of the criticism for this book is due to the way Patroclus is characterized - which I don’t disagree with. I think he was too one-dimensional and the only thing I really knew about him by the end of the book was that he loved Achilles. I wish we got more of his relationship with Briseis and his time at the encampment while the fighting was ongoing. Really anything to give me more of his motivations outside of his love for Achilles. Overall though, it’s a retelling of a very classic story through this queer lens that we don’t get much of in society. I appreciate the angle it’s coming from and really enjoyed a lot of the prose in the first half of the book especially.

I love greek mythology, but this book in some places felt a little dragged out especially leading up to the war. But still a sad book I did tear up.

Beautifully written. I had limited previous exposure to The Iliad and I was easily invested in the characters and story arcs.

I enjoyed it and it was beautifully written. My main takeaway just felt like men are stupid.
