I had hopes for this book. The writing is professional, the protagonist is interesting and the setting is fairly unique. Sadly, the author's inventiveness quickly becomes thread-bear.
It seems that radiation simply makes almost every creature ridiculously large and ferocious. Every corner reveals another new species in the same mold as before. Hiero manages to get out of every scrape by sheer will or by revealing a here-to-fore undiscovered talent.
The bad guys are cartoonishly evil and seem bent on dominating the dregs of humanity, despite 99% of the planet remaining unpopulated. Their society makes no sense. Imagine a big-brother season where all the residents are cannibals and no food is provided. It's just not sustainable.
Argh! I'm so frustrated. So much potential... unfulfilled.

I read this many-many moons ago. Enjoyed it a lot at the time as it had a nice reminiscence of the Fallout RPG franchise setting.

I loved this book. I read it long ago and it was just as enjoyable now. It is set thousands of years in the future and involves the struggle of good against evil in a mutated post-apocalyptic North America.
Open your minds, ignore the implausible and revel in the fantasy of the future!

Writing is awful but I just gotta give this book props for having a lot of really great concepts.

This was one of my favorite childhood books (I think I was 14 or 15 when I read it), and it remains a nostalgic favorite. I started to reread it a few years ago and almost gave up after the first chapter. As is often the case, the eye with which we read books in our teens reads a different story than when we are older. I've since decided not to revisit any more old favorites. It's a great story, but the prose was not as refined and elegant as I remembered. What can I say? It seemed great writing when I was a kid.
Still, a fun and interesting story it is, and Heiro's Journey was definitely worth reading the first time.
