I liked this but I didn’t love it. The female character really annoyed me. Anna moves from Massachusetts to Seattle, Washington as one of “Mercer’s Brides” (Civil war widows from the east to marry lumberjacks in the west). She’s misled, but she’s so unreasonable about it that I found her annoying.

Joe is a lumberjack. He is almost too good to be true. I liked his character though.

I’m glad I read and LOVED Maid to Match first, or I might not realize what a great author she is based on this one book.

Easy read, likable characters, based on real events. I may have to try another by this author.

Unexpectedly riveting

I loved the transformation of these characters as they realized the true meaning of love. I could not put it down!

Like her other book, another enjoyable, quick read. I did find that by the end I was pretty frustrated that the characters keep assuming what the other was feeling instead of just talking about it. But it is fun to read a fun romance that you dont have to worry about content. I enjoy this author.

My friends know: I'm a literary snob. And not really the good kind, whatever the good kind is, I mostly just refuse to read anything that wasn't written hundreds of years ago.

If it's recent: no.
If it's Christian fiction: probably not.
If it's romancey: nevaaaar.

And so, I feel it's only fair to be honest: My brain just said "please! No more Lewis or Dickens or Tolstoy! not yet!" and so, I spent Christmas Break reading a nice little stack of Christian romance.

A Bride in the Bargain was my favorite. I thought the storyline was more original than some of the others, and the characters pleasant and amusing. Nothing to really rave about, but it was like a lovely piece of chocolate cake or some such sugary dessert. I wouldn't eat it all the time, but I loved every crumb.

Oh, except the bit where the heroine kept getting enraptured by the guy's golden armpit hair.... what?! ew.

A very enjoyable read. Loved that the setting is in Seattle.
A cute romance story, set in the 1800's.
Joe Denton, a handsome young lumberjack, living in Seattle, must have a wife or his land will be taken from him. So he does what he has to and that means buying a bride! Mercer is offering to transport women to Seattle for a cost.
Anna is one of those women coming to Seattle but she is no way marrying a man. She tells Mercer that she will agree to be a cook and housekeeper but she will not marry.
When she finally meets her man, they are both disappointed and Joe's looking at losing his land, everything he has worked hard for but can he woo her into marrying him?
A fun entertaining read and with a great message!

It was good in the beginning I liked the concept of a marriage of convenience, but it was just too slow for me and dragged on towards the end of it.

The first half was good, the last part got ridiculous. It dragged on forever, constantly creating different reasons for keeping them apart which were unbelievable. Also writing things like "only a woman would think that way" and other sexist comments was unnecessary.

Clean Christian fiction. Slow paced, but quick read.
