I still really enjoyed this series, but after rereading them as an adult, they aren’t my favourites. As a kid I loved that Daine could talk to animals but as an adult it seemed a little too childish to me. Daine just isn’t my favourite protagonist of Tamora Pierce’s for me anymore and even as a kid Numair as the love interest is weird to me.

Amazing...loved how she was able to see her parents again after everything she'd been through. Her and NUmair finally get together which is awesome.

DNF’d at page 74. I just don’t care enough about this series to finish this last book, especially with this new setting. This is Pierce’s second published series, and her writing style here is not yet something that I enjoy. Her first series, Song of the Lioness, had a lot of problems/plot holes that I found frustrating, but this series just feels quite dull and awkwardly written overall. When recommending Pierce’s books (which I still do) I always recommend her later series first, despite how the characters/events overlap. The Protector of the Small and The Circle of Magic (which doesn’t link to those books set in Tortall) are my favourite series. I would only recommend reading The Song of the Lioness if you want some overall character/world context (centring around Alanna, King Jonathan etc), and The Immortals series if you’re curious about Daine’s origin (but I was personally content with the backstory I got about her in TPotS).

Written as well as the others, but loses a star for the PEDO AGE GAP, YIKES! (I like age gap stories but not like this.)

I'd probably place this series as my second favorite of the Tortall books; I feel like it gets overlooked, which is quite unfair because Daine's magic is just so interesting. This particular book completes the story very well, and it also involves the main romantic pairing getting together, which I enjoyed far more than I thought. Things fell into place a little too easily for my tastes, but it's overall a very good conclusion.

Favorite as a child. It's still a favorite now.
