Comfort read from my childhood.
Have an unhealthy obsession with Daine and Numair having a thing.

Unsatisfying end to an otherwise enjoyable fantasy series. I don't really get why Pierce chose to let the majority of the battles (which all the other books have been leading up to) happen off screen.
Also Numair and Dain.... It isn't a secret that I love a good age gap romance. GOOD being an important word. 16 and 31 is just a bit too much even for a fantasy setting. Also I didn't enjoy that there was no apparent build up to the relationship at all. Numair is entirely platonic, almost parental for all the books and then in this one he is head over heels. I had the horrifying realisation that the reason that the book just springs the romance upon you is that they couldn't have started it in any earlier books since Dain would have been even younger. A 31 year old pining after a fourteen your old girl is even worse.

I devoured re-reading this series in under a week, and am very happy to have done so. I can't remember how many times I read it as a teen, but my copies are definitely very well-loved. Daine and Numair have satisfying character arcs throughout the series, coming together organically in a cute and enjoyable romance, and the pacing through all of the books is honestly quite strong. There are some pitfalls and signs of the times in which the books were written (I'd have higher expectations for diversity and approaches to certain topics in the 2010s) and possibly way too many epithets, but overall this is one series that I felt happily stood up to my nostalgia. I'm really looking forward to reading the Numair series.

The IMMORTALS series ends on a curious note. Things are wrapped up nicely, and Daine's story arc is nicely wrapped up. Several characters from previous books show up, and the major plotlines are all resolved in a satisfactory manner. Several of the questions raised in earlier books are answered, too.
Still, it's a little odd to have Daine sidelined throughout most of the big battles, and only hearing about things secondhand.
All in all, though, it was a satisfactory conclusion to the series, and it's well-worth reading.
