2 stars is v generous, honestly. Not greatly edited and unremarkable characters with underwhelming character development. More often than not I was rolling my eyes or literally shouting, “barf!”

Despite this being the first in the series, I ended up reading this after the sequel — but it didn’t make too much of a difference for me. I sometimes I enjoy doing this because it gives me a chance to see where the characters I’ve already fallen in love with started from (or to explore other side characters I’ve met!).

In this one, Aubrey is a baker in her small town, and she loves everything about it. She plans to expand her bakery — but when a mixup at her shop results in a scathing review, all of her dreams are on hold as she scrambles to regain the reputation she had spent years cultivating.

Landon refuses to print a correction or a retraction for his review, but recognizes that he may have made a mistake that cost a great baker far more than he was willing to sacrifice with his review. Attempting to make amends, Landon arranges for Audrey to save her business by appearing on a baker show. While she’s sure it’ll be a disaster, she isn’t sure what other choice she has.

This book was cute — and filled with sweets. An enemies to lovers, proximity romance, I loved the strength behind Aubrey’s character — and I loved the growth we witness in Landon.

So the first 50 pages were really good and the rest was probably the most boring and eye roll inducing thing I’ve ever read. This book is only 306 pages long but felt like it was 600. Aubrey started out as a kick ass incredibly capable business woman and once she went to do the tv show she turned into a spineless jellyfish and one of the most uninteresting characters ever. There were way too many almost kissing scenes and every single spice scene was fade to black. Once I was over the story I felt like I was already too far through to quit so I started skimming the rest. I know this is some people’s cup of tea but it really was not mine.
