I don't really know what to say about Cane. As you start, you feel detached, confused, concerned, and as the lyrical text draws you in, you find yourself deep in a dark music. These stories are short portraits of the African American experience in the Deep South and the DC area, and while the events described can be brutal, rich personalities are drawn and the whole experience becomes quite mesmerizing.

Stylistically innovative.

I was suggested this for one of my reading challenge prompts. Definitely not at all something I would have picked myself. I didn’t find it the easiest to take in but I appreciate its importance.

*read for class (Cane and Fern)
The first vignette from this selection that I read was an interesting read, but the rest of them were painful for me to read. Definitely not my favorite selection that we've read. I do think Jean Toomer had interesting insights into the intersection of gender, sexuality, and race.

Felt like I didn’t get much of it, but the landscape and language is rich. Most memorable was the couple defiantly falling in love despite the burning world around them.

Even though the poems interrupt the flow of the stories, they were surprisingly enjoyable.

A rough and beautiful and rich book, an experiment in genre. The first two parts present brief episodes of life in the rural south and the urban north. The third segment is essentially theater. Especially when Toomer writes about the South, he's soaking in poetry and music, the call-and-response of church and the midnight panic of white supremacist attacks.
