As a long-time Cassandra Clare fan, I was a bit disappointed. I think there are some definite growing pains with this being her first adult book and her first high fantasy. There were definitely scenes throughout that I enjoyed but I think there were some pacing issues. As the first novel in a high fantasy series, I can forgive the book for the first third of it being slow as there is a lot to set up and I think she did a good job with the world building. The final third of the book was quite good and much faster paced. The middle third of the book I think is where it really lagged. I enjoyed Kel’s pov but was often bored with Lin’s.

Actually quite liked it
I'm more of a casual reader and not really well versed into the drama surrounding books and authors so I didn't know about the plagiarism issues. I did see a few links between this and Shades of magic (Kel, the use of magic..) but it never went further than that in my opinion since the two worlds and lore are quite different.
Loved Lin and Kel, hope the second book will get me a little closer to Conor.
/!\ spoil /!\
I was also rooting for Lin to be paired with Kel more than Conor but well...

Wow, just boring. Too much work building/details…just so much that I lost interest in the characters.

a riveting start to a new series. the pacing was a little slow but that's because the bulk of this book is spent developing characters & plot to set the stage for future novels. i liked the cast of characters and i'm intrigued enough by the mystery this novel sets up. it's definitely a hundred pages too long (700+ pages of world building is a little much) but i'm interested enough to continue this series when the next one comes out.
definitely recommend for any fans of previous Clare novels and anyone who like magik/fantasy novels that place a heavy emphasis on world building.
