The author did an excellent job of creating a character to dislike. There was nothing redeeming about the father (until the end) and therefore the story didn’t grab me as tightly as another story. The lies were just just to much to overcome for me to really enjoy the story.

No easy answers in this book. But, perhaps, a life changed for the better. Change is never easy, though.

Time was the only thing keeping me from devouring this book in one sitting! An interesting story of a man on the run looking for meaning and connection through his teenage son. I feel many will be disappointed in the lack of closure, but I loved how this plot laid out. This is not a book to idly entertain you. It makes you think and wonder and muse.

A harrowing and adventurous tale of a young boy whose estranged father and he go on wild adventures to find where they left off. In this patriarchy, the boy's incarcerated father is released from his sentence and ventures out to his hurt, uneducated son about the pain and grappling life-effects that altered him in prison. On their wild goose chases they try to pinpoint the odd and mystifying realities of both of their lives and the young boy must find emotic relief in his father before learning to trust him----and that emotion is forgiveness.

Readable story about a young teen and the father he hasn't met yet. Imperfect lives narrated with some insights into life after prison and hope without a fairy tale ending.

This is another excellent Walter Dean Myers book. I used it in my inner-city, middle school, all-boys classroom for a literature circle novel. I had a tough time to get my boys reading in class, let alone at home, but this is a book that they would read in their free-time. The story focuses on a young-boy Jimmy, who lives with his grandmother and has some trouble in school. His father (who has been in prison) re-appears and wants to be in his life again. It focuses on the relationship between father and son as they get reacquainted with each other. An excellent book. Myers is an expert at capturing real relationships and situations from the modern-city life of teens and putting these experiences into creative, believable stories.
