I love the Enter-a-Painting trope, an  this book does a lovely job of using that to tell an emotionally complex YA story.

Annie and Claire. Claire and Annie. No matter how you say it, those two need each other and inspire growth, or adventure in each other. This charming middle grade book set on the east coast was a breeze to read through. I’m not huge in the ghost trope as I often prefer more logical explanations for things, as such this book doesn’t hit my favourites shelf, but I still enjoyed it.

This is a really creepy but then heartwarming ghost story for the upper elementary set. A young girl thinks she is seeing her dead sister. Another young girl is dealing with the illness of her mother. But, assuredly, the ending is sweet.

I thought this book was an enjoyable read that centred around the ideas of family, love, loss, and forgiveness. Although the first bit felt slow to me, the last half was fantastic as we learn more about Claire and why her relationship with Maisie is so frayed. The mystery in this book was also fantastic because the whole time you're trying to figure out the lives of these two girls. The aspect of ghosts in this novel was also interesting and quite enjoyable. Part of the reason why I didn't give it a higher rating is because I didn't feel like I connected with the characters as much as I'd like to and the first third of the book felt sort of slow to me. That was sort of a sum of what I felt while reading it, but I do have a review on my blog :) https://bookbloggingforfun.wordpress.com/2017/10/16/the-painting-book-review/
