I’d give it five stars, but I try for reserve that for deeply moving works. For what this was, I deem it five stars. It’s kept me hooked and rooting for characters you shouldn’t root for but compel you to hope for them. It was brutal and disgusting and surprising and really really well done story of a fucked up family.

ahlborn has a knack for writing interesting, complex characters. i think that’s where her strength is.

overall, i really enjoyed this book. i think the cannibalistic, incestuous appalachian hillbilly trope is a bit overdone & harmful, which is ultimately why i rated this 4 instead if 5. that being said, this book was like nothing i have read before.

Here’s your trigger warning for this book: blood, gore, incest, sexual assault, trauma, and very very disturbing story line and descriptions. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

If I hadn’t seen SO MANY TikTok recommendations for this book because it’s was really dark and twisted and messed up, I would have liked this a lot more. I was expecting Hills Have Eyes backwoods family gore but it was just your average thriller. Instead I got a lot of problematic backwoods hillbilly family. There was barely any gore, the cannibalism was not discussed enough, it was just “we eat people”
