Holy cringe. Finally, I'm done with it.

What is nuance? Subtlety? Sarah J. Maas obviously does not know. Her writing is horrible, her characters are all the same—beautiful, super powerful, with tragic past and blah blah blah—her dialogues are on the level with 5 graders joking about balls and dicks, her sex scenes are the cringiest, and her plots make no sense. Whoever says that this is the best book they've ever read, I'm begging them to read something else.

I'm just gonna include the most eye-rolling bits:

“No wonder you’re so thin if you vomit up your guts every night.”

Why on EARTH would S.J. Maas put this in??

"Rhys merely shrugged and looked to me. To let me choose. Always—it was always my choice with him these days."

Oh my god, the bare minimum... we stan

"He jerked his chin at my tattoo. “Give a shout down the bond if you get anything accomplished before breakfast.” [...]  “You could try rubbing it on certain body parts and I might come faster.
Alone in the frost-gilded forest, I replayed his words and a quiet chuckle rasped out of me.

Oh my god, girl PLEASE!!!!!

“And is being immortal lovelier than being human?
[...] I looked the High Lord of Summer up and down, as he had examined me, brazenly and without a shred of politeness, and then said, “
You tell me.”
  Tarquin’s eyes crinkled. “
You are a pearl. [...]"

INCREDIBLE comeback from Feyre! The wits! The smarts!

I said to Lucien, low and quiet and as vicious as the talons that formed at the tips of my fingers, as vicious as the wondrous weight between my shoulder blades, “When you spend so long trapped in darkness, Lucien, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”

😐😐😐

I wouldn’t think of why this position was one he wanted to end in, to have me banish the stained dark with the light.

But I would glow—for him, I’d glow. For my own future, I’d glow.

Yes, the glow and the darkness are literal here. And it's a sex scene.

And, obviously, Feyre is all powerful and good at absolutely everything (including reading and writing that she spent what, a week on learning?).

These books are trash :)

P.S. Sarianna Silvonen did an incredible job translating the book into Finnish, improving the text as much as it was possible.

I!! GET!! THE!! HYPE!!!!!!

The first book really had me thinking I was going to be the only person to hate this series. But this one!! This one changed it all for me.

All the emotions. The pining! The tension! The heartbreak! I devoured it all.

The ending had my heart racing. Feyre is such a strong and selfless character. And my bat boys! Such golden retrievers.

Really not a lot to say except I GET IT NOW!!! The hype? Worth it.

I was so happy with how this book explored Feyre's trauma and addressed some of the issues I noticed in the first book, namely
SpoilerTamlin's abusive controlling nature
which was subtle in the first book. The character evolution that Feyre continues to undergo is sincere and beautiful.

Sarah J. Maas does a lot of great things with her writing (world-building, spice, description), but creating strong, interesting characters (especially female/women characters) is her greatest strength as a literary voice. All of the new characters we meet are fully fleshed out, with extensive backstories that makes pulling back the layers incredibly satisfying. I just don't want to let them go.

Once I was 3/4 of the way through the book I started to experience terrible anxiety about the fate of our beloved characters, like keep-me-tossing-and-turning-all-night anxiety. I know the end of the series will have me crying but I want them to be tears of joy and not gut-wrenching heartbreak. Mother of the cauldron, hear my prayer.

Be ready to be dealing with the occurrence and PTSD resulting from an insane amount of trauma, but the story is so incredibly addicting that you still end up feeling fulfilled by the end

Alright so, I HATED the main character in the first book of the series, for a multitude of reasons, namely she was dumb as rocks. The start of the book did not change this fact, however, the proximity of her character to Rhysand tricked my brain into thinking she changed, and I eventually liked her again. However, in my lesbian opinion, GODDAMN RHYSAND. That is all I will say on the matter, other than that, the plot picked up but not until the latter half of the book, also
SpoilerTamlin had such a strange change of character from the first book, I understand it was explained by the ‘trauma’ he got from watching Feyre die (get a life bro she literally couldn’t read…) but it really gaffe me whiplash reading these back to back.
Overall, liked this a lot more than the first book, and if you’re looking for a book that will make you react for an invisible audience you’ve found it!
