I read this because my little sister is obsessed, and as surprisingly had never read this in any of my school years.

I can see why this has become a classic. It was definitely written by a 16 year old, but I think it was a sweet and compelling story of found family and friendship.

i was at a used bookstore on vacation and i needed to buy something to perform my affinity for their doomed mission so i bought this and read it in one sitting. i've seen the movie a dozen times and didn't realize how faithful it is to the book. notable exceptions: the matt dillon character is supposed to have blond hair. also when they say the word "tough" they're spelling it "tuff" which is actually weirdly important information. stay gold etc
