Was macht der Salamander da? Wohin wollten wir noch einmal?

Reminds me of my grandmother. A really fascinating take on the spiral into dementia faced by our main character— I had the feeling, as the book progressed, that the growing fluctuation of the environment around him correlated with his own internal madness. It really touches on the core of the human spirit: what we deem necessary to remember, and our inability to maintain control in the face of cosmic fury (or love, really, because what is evolution if not proof of countless generations of beings before us choosing to live on, despite disaster?). Relatively short read. You’ll enjoy if you like reading about people slowly losing touch with reality.

Read Jorie Graham's poem "Erosion" and if you like it, then read this book for an extended play.
