Possibly the best book I've read in I can't remember how long. Characters that felt real and amazing storytelling.

I always find I enjoy Libba Bray's books better the second time around. It could be that, knowing the plot, I'm not so fixated on what's going to happen and can better appreciate her writing. And her writing is so very good. Bray has such a way with metaphors, and is so skilled at writing authentic 1920's dialogue, something I think lots of authors struggle with. I still love all of the characters, and now I'm burning to find out what happens to them in King of Crows!

This felt like YA paranormal Avengers, and I mean that in a very good way. We've had two previous books introducing all these characters, and now they're banding together even more to kick some ass. That midpoint part of the novel was great. I would have been very happy with more of it. Not that the rest was bad, I just like some good team ass kicking.

I also loved all of the themes about America and societal outcasts and discriminated groups and income inequality. It's 2017, and we are barely one step removed from bigots and racists advocating for eugenics. It's scary how little things change and how very relevant problems in 1927 can be today. I like that Libba Bray doesn't pull her punches when talking about these things.

It's been awhile since I read the rest of the series, so it took me a few chapters to get back into the characters, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn't too difficult to keep track of everyone.

The villain was so-so for me, and has been for the entire series. He's so abstract that I don't really understand what he is or where he came from or what he's capable of. Yeah, it's bad he's letting ghosts muck up the place and that he's kidnapping people and is probably going to do something I don't quiet understand with some sort of rift to a world that isn't really clear to me, but the societal crap these characters are dealing with is more compelling to me. Guess the Diviners are like the Avengers in that sense, too. I can overlook a meh villain if everything else is done well.
