Final review, after a second, full-length, fully "hopscotching" read:
I understand why this is often lauded as a great book. The novelty and experimental style are intriguing. The multi-layered structure is impressive. The references and philosophy could keep me occupied for ages.
But I don't think it's a particularly good book. It takes so much work to read that I only rarely succeeded in immersing myself in its schizophrenic flow. The characters are all insufferable, and I can't say I enjoyed the experience.

All I can tell for now is that it was only partially comprehensible (that is mostly a bad thing) but that parts of it are nagging at my brain, and won't quite let go (that's probably a good sign).
There's not much point in describing what the book is "about". The few stepping stones that could be called a plot are almost completely submerged under the meandering stream-of-consciousness writing that blends description, interior monologue, and fragmentary conversations. It's the kind of book that rewards a re-reading because you'll get twice as much out of it the second time around -- as long as you don't mind that you've only gone from 20% to 40% comprehension.
Conveniently, the book gives explicit instructions for that re-read. One pass is to be linear, through the first half of the book or so. (That's what I have just completed.) Another pass is to hop around in a prescribed order, interleaving various "expendable" chapters between the chapters in the first half.
I'm hoping that the extra chapters will add some structure and fill in some gaps in the action. But this doesn't seem like that kind of book. It seems more likely that it will just add another layer of confusion, stepping the digressions up another notch.
I'm quite ambivalent about my second dive into this one: both eager and apprehensive.

Uau. Que livro inesperado. Quando o autor nos desafia com dois métodos de leitura decidi escolher, como é óbvio, o mais complexo. Ler saltando de capítulo em capítulo, mais à frente e mais atrás. Na verdade, não fiquei fã com esta opção, porque estou habituada a ir sempre no mesmo ritmo, página a página, por ordem. Senti que ia perdendo o foco ou que me desinteressava do livro mais rapidamente. No entanto, tirando isso, achei uma obra linda! Julio Cortázar é um mestre da prosa poética. Escreve frases tão bonitas e ricas que ficamos com vontade de ficar a saboreá-las e relê-las ad eternum.

Ich wollte das Buch mögen. Ich find das Konzept total toll und hab mich lange darauf gefreut, es zu lesen. Aber es ist ganz viel Geschwafel und viele Anspielungen und Referenzen, die über meinen Kopf hinweggehen. Ich kann einigen Überlegungen nicht folgen und das machen auch die gelegentlich wirklich hübsch formulierten Sätze nicht wett. Schade. Aber im Moment hab ich keinen Kopf für Bücher, die mir keinen Spaß machen. Vielleicht zu einem anderen Zeitpunkt nochmal.

for all of the 668 pages of this book I had only one thought: how much I want to punch the author in the face.

¡Wow! Rayuela sí que es toda una experiencia. Lo leí con mi grupo de lectura y hubo opiniones de todo tipo, incluso quienes no pudieron continuarlo. Y entiendo perfectamente la razón.
Rayuela es un libro que amas u odias, que te atrapa o que te aleja. Y para prenderte a él tienes que esforzarte, sin embargo (en mi caso), llega un momento (que curiosamente coincide con el de otros compañeros) en el que notas que ya estás enganchado.
Mi opinión respecto al libro es igual de abstracta que su lectura. Sólo puedo decir que Cortázar ha hecho lo que ha querido, incluso hasta en los momentos en que causó aversión.
Definitivamente creo que es un libro que todos debemos leer, de un autor que representa a la Literatura muy dignamente... me dejó sorprendida.
