Like all Kristin Hannah books, you expect a gut punch. This book is no exception! I cried from joyous moments as well as the painful ones. I found myself rooting for the main characters so often, they felt real, like I was going through this with them. The only reason I rated 4.5 and not 5, is that I would have liked to see Kristin dive into the sister's past and more into what divided them initially, and express things about their parents. If there had been just a tad of background, this is easily a 5 star read. If you have children (i do) there are some trigger warnings, but this is an excellent read!

All I can say is 'Wow.' Hannah is really becoming a favorite author of mineā€¦ may be already. When I shelved this book I was hoping for the same vibes as 'Nell' (the 1994 film with Jodi Foster), and I did get something similar, but also so much more. This is a raw story about love and trauma and wildness and the cruelty of the world. I was captivated. I loved the different perspectives we got, from psychiatrist and protagonist Julie, to her sister Ellie's to the local Doctor, and even Girl/Alice's perspective plus all of these intertwining relationships and connections and storylines. I just couldn't get enough. I laughed, I cried, I felt all of the emotion. This is a must read!!! I will be thinking about these characters for a long time to come.

I really need to get working on the Kristin Hannah backlist!
Dr. Julia Cates is a renowned psychiatrist, until her reputation is tarnished during a controversy with a former patient.
Her sister Ellie, the chief of police for Rain Valley, calls upon Julia to assess a seemingly feral child who randomly appeared in town.
The character of Alice is one I won't soon forget, and Magic Hour is not an easy book to put down.
What makes a person "human", gives them sense of self? How does lack of, then acquisition of, language form and change relationships?
The story is uniquely told in that we don't have everything spelled out for us, given the character source of the background. Fascinating, to be sure.
Recommended!
