I really wanted to enjoy this book. The story intrigued me and I love several other novels by the same author, but from the very beginning, I was struggling to connect with Magic Hour. The storyline includes some very serious content, but thrown together with all that was this constant,  uncomfortable attempt at romance between main characters, poor/outdated research regarding autism & other neurodisabilities, an obsession with female weight, and a cast of unnecessary townsfolk characters best described as "country-bumpkin". The narration was also grating at times, very sing-song like someone with little experience around kids attempting to read a children's novel, instead of the serious adult content being read. I gave it 30% and just have no interest to continue. Kristin Hannah has far better novels out there.

Like all Kristin Hannah books, you expect a gut punch. This book is no exception! I cried from joyous moments as well as the painful ones. I found myself rooting for the main characters so often, they felt real, like I was going through this with them. The only reason I rated 4.5 and not 5, is that I would have liked to see Kristin dive into the sister's past and more into what divided them initially, and express things about their parents. If there had been just a tad of background, this is easily a 5 star read. If you have children (i do) there are some trigger warnings, but this is an excellent read!

The characters in this book are so lovable and there is a lot of good commentary about life success and defining who you are outside other’s opinions.

This is an incredible found family story and the “mother/daughter” relationship aspects of this book are incredible touching. The end of the book had me sobbing!

All I can say is 'Wow.' Hannah is really becoming a favorite author of mine… may be already. When I shelved this book I was hoping for the same vibes as 'Nell' (the 1994 film with Jodi Foster), and I did get something similar, but also so much more. This is a raw story about love and trauma and wildness and the cruelty of the world. I was captivated. I loved the different perspectives we got, from psychiatrist and protagonist Julie, to her sister Ellie's to the local Doctor, and even Girl/Alice's perspective plus all of these intertwining relationships and connections and storylines. I just couldn't get enough. I laughed, I cried, I felt all of the emotion. This is a must read!!! I will be thinking about these characters for a long time to come.
