between 2 and 2.5 ⭐️
the story had potential but it was really badly written, there are too many characters and way too many descriptions that add 0 value to the story. not an enjoyable read!

I just finished it and well the writing isn’t terrible but it felt racist from the beginning and it got worse, not to mention other problematic things.
So, about the racism. The mean people using magic who killed a lot of people to assess their power are really marked as Arabic. The wordings, the names, their physical traits. So they’re the mean ones, resulting in their genocide by the white people of Corinth (and Sable/Imari falls in love with the main perpetrator of these mass murders ???? Come on girl you can do better). The guards smell “hashi” which sounds a lot like “haschich”, and perpetrating a big cliche about Arabs spending their time smoking drug…
I could quote so many other things.
As for the problematic things not linked to racism or not so blatant :
1) the main character falls for the killer of her people. It’s a NO !
2) Why does the king have to rape all the girls (yes even girls or clearly described as having underage faces/features) ? How does it serves the plot ???

I’m gonna stop there because I could write so many things about that book that irked me. And the plot takes sooo long it’s boring on top of everything else.

This was a reread, but I forgot so much it was like a first read.

I loved so much about the magic, history and culture of this book. And I thoroughly enjoyed the two main character and their tumultuous, but believable relationship. But I found this book suffered from familiar tropes and predictable plot lines, which made this an enjoyable, but average read. I am curious where the story goes from here, but it’s not a priory at this point.

I’ll admit this took me a bit to get into but once this picked up, oh boy was I hooked. The magic/world requires some concentration to understand but that delicious enemies to lovers trope had me hello.
