For a book that has children with vampiric tendencies, this was pretty boring. It definitely focuses more on the family drama and interpersonal relationships of the kids' moms than it does on the actual vampire kids, so if you went into this expecting a thriller with a supernatural twist like I did, you'll be disappointed. The kids' vampirism definitely serves as more of a metaphor about the all-encompassing mother-child relationship than it does as a kind of thrilling element. That aside, the ending was bland and unsatisfying and I feel like the interviews with the children could have been cut out completely without the overall story suffering. I think this author just may not be for me.

Lots of fluff, plot lines don’t always seem to add up. Couple twists I wasn’t expecting. Decent book overall.

So much more than a book about blood sucking children
I couldn't pass this book up. The idea of a classroom of preschoolers suddenly thirsting for blood drew in this actual preschool teacher.
This story has many pieces.
1- a class of 4-year-old students who are suddenly biting, at school and at home. The children begin demonstrating a thirst for blood.
2- A murder mystery where the culprit might actually be one of the children.
3- A tight-knit group of Mom friends
4- Three very different mothers, their approach to motherhood, and the inadequacies they feel they must cover up.
Cutting Teeth is a book about motherhood and the sacrifices that a mother makes.
I enjoyed the book and would recommend it. I did find the three mothers to be stereotypical- the overachieving room-mom, the granola mom who is also a single-mom running a business out of her home, and the mom who is barely holding onto her remote job as she navigates parenthood. The dad's were also stereotypical, working long hours or sitting on the couch watching TV. I think the stereotypes were a means of giving each mother-reader someone to identify with even if the reader is an amalgam of all three and more.

This was a mixed bag for me- I loved the unusual premise of the “vampire kids” and thought it would slide into horror/thriller but it doesn’t go in that direction. Ultimately it’s about women struggling with motherhood and what makes a “good” mother which isn’t a new topic in literature.I liked the author breaking up the narrative with the police interrogations but at the end of the day this one was squarely in the “it was fine” category for me.

Audiobook performance: 5 ⭐️
From the New York Times bestselling author of Whisper Network comes Cutting Teeth, part murder mystery, part motherhood manifesto. This thrilling story of parental love begs the question, is there anything a mother wouldn't do for her child?
This story is told from the points of view of three mothers, Darby, Mary Beth, and Rhea, whose four-year-old children are in the same preschool class at Little Academy. Each woman's life has been consumed by motherhood, and they are on their own personal journeys to reclaim their identities outside of being parents. Their plans are disrupted, however, when a disturbing and unusual medical condition goes around the preschool classroom. What started as a biting incident develops into something more: the children crave blood. No, really. A classroom outbreak of Pediatric Renfield's Syndrome has caused actual vampiric children. That's not the worst of it, though. When the children's young teacher is found dead, the only witnesses are ten four-year-olds. But they're not just witnesses, they're also suspects, and so are their mothers.
I listened to this audiobook narrated by the incredible January LaVoy, and her performance was fantastic. I actually checked to see if there was more than one narrator because her character voices were so distinctive. If I could give her 6 stars, I would. Just a really superb, high-quality audiobook. The novel itself was a fascinating take on the high standards that mothers are held to by society, told in the most unique way. This is definitely not your typical murder mystery. Big Little Lies meets...Dracula? A fun book to add to your summer reading list.
