Don’t let the title and cover fool ya, this is definitely not the light, fluffy rom-com most of you, like me, probably assumed Beach Read would be.

While there was no shortage of romance between January and Gus—their chemistry was evident and I genuinely loved their witty banter—there was just this element of grief that inundated the seemingly simple, light-hearted book, making it deeper and much more complex.

Now, I love a serious read as much as I love me some chick lit, but what I don’t love is when a book constantly teeters back and forth between the two. Henry just couldn’t pick one to follow and as a result, I felt like the entire story devolved into a whole mess of different storylines that just didn’t mesh together cohesively.

Let me start by saying that I am a fantasy romance type of girl. I don’t really like the pop culture references, real life, real world problems type of books. It makes it hard for me to escape and I read romance to escape. I got this book because I was going on vacation to Hawaii and wanted a Beach Read so what better book than Beach Read. I was about to DNF it when I felt like it was taking too long to get to the romance. Luckily I decided to stick it out one more chapter and I’m so happy I did. I think this is the first contemporary romance they I genuinely liked. The pacing at first is slow but then it all just starts to snowball after. It was so funny to me how I felt like January but I could relate to Gus coming from a similar background as him. I found myself feeling seen as a romantic but also as someone who doesn’t really trust love because of the hardships I went though with love. I recommend this to anyone barley getting into romance or anyone who does not typically like contemporary romance!

Love that it did a fantastic job as romance novel which makes you want to fall in love but also introduce some level of reality into it. The Happily Ever After is a strand of Happy-for-nows for every happy moment in the past. The moment is always the present.

Gaaah, so sweet. As with all of Emily Henry’s books, I loved the sharp dialogue, raw and real characters, and charming love story. Such a fun read!
