Scramble my brains zaddy, you get a pass for the major sci fi trope (I'm not saying which one) by writing this in the 70's. Hit me with, not one, but two, twists why don't you. Ouch !!

The majority of this novel is confusing and weird and all the characters are terrible. Which is kind of the point, because the reveal at the end is what makes the book so great.
Spoiler They've been living in an artificial world of their own making that they use to pass the time
. And while typically the whole "it was all a dream" ending makes me annoyed to no end, here it works brilliantly because that messed up world full of all the weirdness and hatred was what their minds made. Of course then there's the question of: are they actually awake, or is the ship just another level of the simulation?

All the elements of a PKD book, but I hated it?

A short read and a good one. Unreality, metaphysics, and paranoia neatly rolled together with a sting un the tail. Classic PKD.

seems to my experience with Philip K. Dick. lots of interesting ideas, weird writing style that seems like it was translated from another language, confusing cast of characters, all seems all over the place but kind of makes sense in the end. It started out as a 4 star book, plunged to 2 for most of the middle, and just made it to 3 on how it ended. Still loved the idea of gods that just work on some planets.

Feels like an echo of Ubik, but a pretty great one! PKD’s brief flights of transcending physical reality are touching: brief glimmers of hope in an otherwise dire universe.

An interesting story with a twist, not my favorite by PKD, but enjoyable.
