Hunger Games + Underworld = Serpent and The Wings of Night

I still LOVED IT!

Listen here, I’m still recovering from the EMOTIONAL TRAUMA this book gave me. The last 15% of this book did not happen, okay? We shall not talk about it.

What I Liked

I have a list. I liked the character was already damaged, the father had 1,000 conflicting emotions (Jekyll and Hyde sort of vibes), the getting to know the MMC was a pleasure, and the reveals were shocking. It made me tear up!! ALSO… I REPEAT THAT LAST PART IS NOT REAL!!!!!

What I Didn’t Like

There were some things that were plot convenient, such as the fact they can leave the Moon Palace. I get is to build more the Father and Daughter relationship, but it felt too convenient. I also wished that I could know more about the magic system.

I cannot tell you how much this book made me feel. I was frustrated, shocked, horrified, loved, and devastated. I recommend it!

Oraya is a human who was rescued (kidnapped?) at a young age by the vampire king. She grew up terrified of the vampires who surrounded her, her only safe haven the vampire king who became her father. Now, she has a chance to seize her power through a fight-to-the-death tournament. As the tournament progresses, though, Oraya must decide what she really wants.

The world that Broadbent built is interesting, if a little inconsistent. Why can vampires get sick and die, yet they must kill their parents to succeed them? Oraya's life prior to the tournament isn't well-described - what has she been doing for 15 years besides killing people and talking to Ilana? Can she read and do math or is this another Feyre situation? On the other hand, the vampire characteristics and the political lore are fleshed-out (pun-intended?). I have no complaints about the writing, besides the 1st person POV.

The plot is fairly straightforward given that it's a tournament, but Oraya's character development is the real story. The last 10% of the book is a rollercoaster and it ends on a cliffhanger. I was disappointed to see that my library doesn't have the sequel so although I do plan to read it, I'm not sure when I'll get around to it.
