In and of itself, this is a beautiful read. The setting of the story feels more traditionally Gothic than the other two Nightborn books. I liked that the characters know themselves but still have room to grow. And the dark story of the plague adds to the fast-paced feeling of desperation. It was a quick and compelling read. I finished this book in one sitting, as I just didn't want to put it down. I also really loved that the FMC is a woman in her 30s (and an academic!)! Such a refreshing break from the teen and 20-something characters of so many other fantasy novels! If you're reading the Nightborn Duet of the Crowns of Nyaxia series, I recommend spending the time to read this 150 pg short side story. And you don't have to read it before book 2 (The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King) to understand the story line, but I did. Even if you're not reading the rest of the series I still think it's worth your time because it's actually just a beautiful story.

I have read some of the other books in the Crowns of Nyaxia universe, but this is a standalone. You do not need to read anything prior to understand the plot.

As a Carissa Broadbent fan, I’m not surprised that I enjoyed this piece of work. She did a great job creating an engaging story in such a short book. I wasn’t expecting to be as invested in this novella, but it was a fantastic start to the year for my romantasy reads.

This could be a great option for people interested in fantasy and romantasy but not into long books or series. It’s a short and sweet dark fantasy with a touch of romance sprinkled in.

I really enjoyed this story. I had already read the duology before reading this one. I love the pacing of it, whiles it's quick, it's meaningful and I truly enjoyed Liliths character and world view. A truly strong FMC that is string despite her own chronic illness and for the people she loves.

Another banger from Carissa, are we surprised at this point? LOVED this. Read this after Ashes, but I was very intrigued about Lilith and was so excited to see that she was the FMC. Loved watching her and Vale's relationship grow. I also really enjoyed the plague aspect and the science of it all. This world is so so cool and I'll most definitely read anything she writes in it,

I really liked this short book. You can honestly read it in a day and it was a cute set up for the next book in the series.
