this book felt like being held hostage and not in a good way. i am usually able to get through a “long” book in a couple of days but for some reason, i was fighting for my life. AND I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY.

the plot only got good towards the last hundred pages or so. the length was too much and i felt like half of it was filler. this could have been 300 pages. the repetition in this one also really got to me. “YoU HaVE a QuEStiOn? ShOcKer!” like pleaseeeeee let her live. i had 20000 questions most of the time so poppy’s five questions were FINE. also if i heard about willa colyns’ book one more time, i would have thrown my kindle against a wall.

as much as i love casteel for poppy, i am lowkey glad he has been taken as a prisoner. the sex and constant horniness was getting on my nerves. i looooveee a good smutty book, but it was not doing it for me in this one.

now i have to read the next one considering it’s the final one (hopefully). it’s an actual hostage situation. praying this was a “third book hiccup” because i did enjoy the second book. 2.5 stars.

I like this books a lot but I feel like the characters have been just traveling for two books and nothing have really happened. At least next book promises action. And thank God Jennifer for not ending this book in half a scene too. It was getting really annoying.

This series is getting progressively better with each book. We are finally getting some gritty action and Poppy has finally become into her own.

There smut has been dialled up a little which to be honest, I didn't think was possible. But it is becoming balanced with the plot making the overall story far more immersive.

Although this is a 3 star read for me, I am very committed to finishing the story. The plot has had weak moments, predictable "twists" and some cringey dialogue but I'm finding each novel stronger and I'm eager to see where Armentrout takes Poppy's story.

This book took me for a ride! The beginning was SO good - so many shocking reveals, I kept gasping out loud and worrying my husband. Then, the middle section was very heavy on the world-building. It took me much longer to get through this book than I thought it would, but I understand that the info was necessary in order to make the ending happen. And the ending? WOW. I was blown away!

This book reminded me a lot of the previous book, A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, in the way the overall arc of the story worked: shocking revelations, world-building, steam, world-building, DRAMATIC FINISH. (The steamy scenes were few and far between, but when it was time for some steam, Jennifer did not disappoint! CHAPTER 16?!!?) And all that time spent sifting through the info being dumped on us was well worth it in the end, because the ending was one of *the most* epic endings of a book I've ever read.

I can't wait for the next book (and for the spin-off prequel series to come out in October)!
