I was close to giving this book 4 stars until the end. Other reviewers seemed to find Liz unlikable, but I thought she and her struggles (both internal and external) were very personal and real. I also appreciated that Johnstown’s real historical events were incorporated into the novel. However I wasn’t a fan of the convoluted supernatural ending; the story would’ve been stronger without it in my opinion. Nevertheless, this was a strong debut!

The premise of this book is very fascinating and the first half of it really pulled me in, but there’s honestly a lot going on by the time of the second half. The mystery thriller paired with the supernatural elements was just all over the place and the comparisons to that supernatural deity to what the author was trying to convey with racism and classism got lost in it. Everything else made sense though! Still, I look forward to reading more works from this author. Her writing style does pull you in and makes you more curious every time you turn the page.

4.75 I could see this as a movie in my head while reading. The characters were truly people going through these things while the setting was so clear I could even feel the anxiety of the woods and the hills.
A fantastic debut novel that I couldn't put down. Took less than 4 days to finish this beautiful horror, and I am a slow reader with a busy life.
My only complaint was at times it was hard to stay present when the POV changes, but I got used to it halfway through.
