I was sort of hoping to learn more about specific directors, actors, and techniques. I did get a couple of movies to watch out of this though.

A fascinating look into not only Film History, but the history that surrounded the societies the films were produced.... Also, it gave me QUITE the long watch list lol!

This one surprised me. I was expecting a simple chronology of film and got a relatively scholarly work, part art history and part Critical sociology. The text frequently quotes important writing and shows its work, citing both in text and in endnotes. The art is pefectly suited to the style of the book as well.

I am not a huge film-lover, but one thing I do love is punditry. I really enjoyed the way this book was organised into sections concerning different themes, and how those themes then linked films from entirely different periods. I found this a more effective and engaging approach than a straightforward history of film-making (which is what I was expecting). It also made me consider adding some films to my ‘to watch’ list (spoiler: I won’t actually get round to watching them).
One downside of waiting so long to read this is that while it discusses issues around discrimination in the film industry, it doesn’t cover any developments since it was published. I think it is at least talked about more openly now, and some progress has been made, so it would be interesting to see what this book would look like nowadays.
Side note: In a bid to spice up my reading life, I’ve sorted my Goodreads list by date added, and I’m going back to the start. I’ll be reading one book added in each year, starting in 2015, working forward, and then repeating until I get bored (which won’t be long). This is book 2 of the catchupathon, 2016.
Reason for putting off reading: It’s actually my boyfriend’s (he also hasn’t read it)

If you enjoy film, or are looking for a text to teach it that is highly accessible for say high school students, or college freshman or sophomores, this is it. It's clear, concise, and provides examples. Also, if you just enjoy film, and have seen many of the staples, this is an interesting way to re-view films you already know and love.
