I absolutely love the movie, so I was excited to read the book. Unfortunately, I was bored to tears. I think the letter/email format is just not for me.

An odd choice to tell a love story through emails, instant message transcript and cards/letters sent by the characters. I thought it worked in this instance - the story of Rosie and Alex. I did find the jumps in time weren't always clear though and that we missed out on "seeing" things happen. The reader has to rely on how the character tells it to someone else. There were many funny parts (I found myself horrified but snickering when Rosie meets the "serial killers" in the bar and the ensuing situation), but also a lot of frustration on the part of the reader. If only Alex had told Rosie what really happened on her 16th birthday! There were a lot of coincidences that kept them apart but the ending was satisfactory in my opinion, though a long time coming in their lives!

I liked the story of Katie and Toby as well. A nice little parallel to the overall Rosie and Alex arc!

I will say as a bit of a disclaimer that I’d watched the movie about a zillion times before I picked up the book.

Either way, I have beef with this book. The pacing is bad. There’s an entire character who exists only to be fat-shamed. The ending is highly unsatisfactory.

I love Cecelia Ahern. I don't know what more I can say. Everything she writes is gold. Her characters are so real, flawed, and perfect. I love the concept of love lasting and growing through the years while seeming to be unrequited! Brilliant. My only problem with the book was getting used to the mail/email format and I wish there had been dates on the correspondence. But that was easily overcome. I can't say it enough: I LOVE CECELIA AHERN!!!

A love story that feels realistic, its such an underhyped book that is one of my favorite romances.

Well, I finished it. And, other than liking Rosie, Alex & Katie, that's pretty much all the good news I have. Now on to the bad news. I found this to be sad, depressing, and overly long. It just went on and on. It made me cry - and not in a good way. I was just so sad for Rosie and all her missed opportunities.

Generally I like epistolary books - I enjoy the format. But I listed to the audiobook, and because so many of the emails and notes were very short, it felt really choppy. And I have to admit to upping the speed to finish it as quickly as possible.

I loved the film so really tried to like the book, but it wasn’t for me. It could have been about half the length and it would have been a lot better. The ending felt very flat and anticlimactic after the build up of the whole book:( I mainly just felt really sorry for Rosie for most of it, she had a bit of a rubbish life.

Also I’m sorry but both of their friends give awful advice
ruby telling Rosie not to go for the job and then being shocked and being like ‘why’ when she doesn’t???
