This was a fun quick read that was a nice to escape into. I love historical fiction and romance, so this was right up my alley. It's a cozy and fun read.
I did also appreciate the author addressing how the British have a tendency of taking things for their museums without asking. It may not be accurate of a person from that time, but I don't care. It made me like the male love interest even more because he was respectful of indigenous culture.

DNF 18%. Confusing scenes, where I had to re-read several times to sort of understand but not completely until I just gave up. Didn't care for the writing style, it was weird. But what really turned me off this thing was the awful confusion of Mayan and Aztec cultures, by the heroine, who supposedly knows better. As a Mexican, I find that kind of offensive. At least do the most basic research into this, for fucks sake.

“The Lady’s Guide to Scandal” by Emmanuelle de Maupassant is a fun story including forced proximity and a fake engagement all at a snowed-in Christmas house party.  Cornelia has been working at the London museum helping to organize, catalog, and clean artifacts from Egypt.  Ethan has been exploring Central America and has collected items for display at the Museum.  While Ethan was working at the Museum he had a run in with Cornelia.  He decided that taking her and her aunts to his sister’s house party was a great idea since they were friends during their childhoods.  His sister was working her hardest to get him married off and so she invited several eligible ladies to party.  Eathan was having no part in the matchmaking and decided that he would make his own arrangements to avoid her makinations.  Will they end up together in the end?  What discoveries will they make along the way? I enjoyed this book and found it entertaining.

This was my first book by this author. Ethan and Cornelia’s story is a sweet and slightly spicy Christmas romance. It started a bit slow, but picked up as it went on. I will definitely be reading more of this series by Emanuelle de Maupassant.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I first read this book in the Christmas collection last November titled Have Yourself A Merry Little Scandal. I remember giving the story four stars. I gave it four stars because, honestly, it was an enormous collection of novellas, and I think I became overwhelmed. I found it hard to fairly give five stars with so many works vying for attention. I enjoyed this book even more, the second time around! Without the distraction of so many different plots, this story was bright. It was a shining gem of a Christmas love story.

This book stood out for two reasons. The first was the solidity and strength of the two main characters. Both Ethan and Cornelia were vibrant and intelligently written. Loving care and thought were used in the creation of the characters. I loved Ethan, the American archaeologist. Who doesn’t love a sexy, intrepid explorer? He is larger than life. Being American, Ethan is refreshingly unique. Cornelia is a widow mired in a scandal that wasn’t her doing. She is stuck in a dull, repetitive life. She has been left behind as an afterthought when everyone she loves focuses only on their happiness. Cornelia is looking for adventure in life and love. The couple, however unlikely, clicked. They complimented each other perfectly in intelligence and passion.

The second reason the book stood out was the excellent plot. It was intelligent, quick, and sexy. The backgrounds of Ethan and Cornelia were well thought out and added validity to the main themes. This was a fast-paced, sensual, romantic love story set against an ordinary Christmas house party. The house party is a common theme, yet the storytelling breathed new life into a well-used situation.

The Lady’s Guide To Scandal is the fourth book in The Lady’s Guide series. I was unaware that this was a series the first time I read the book. Now that I know, I am going back to read them from the beginning. Ethan and Cornelia’s love story captured my heart. The characters, plot, and backdrop were fantastic. This was a thrilling, passionate journey that I didn’t want to end. The love story between Ethan and Cornelia proves that love can be born from heartache, scandal, and disappointment. This was an all-encompassing, intelligent, sensual, and turbulent adventure that will please even the most discerning of a reader!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book through Booksprout. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Scandal seems to follow Cornelia wherever she goes, and she does not like that even a bit. She wants to live a simple life, have a simple husband, and stay far away from society and its gossip as possible. Ethan is a famous explorer that returns to bring some artifacts to the museum and to spend the holidays with his sister who wants to see him married off. Cornelia and Ethan played together as kids and then life took them separate routes. Now they are reunited at a holiday party and Ethan proposes to pretend an engagement and then fake break up afterward but fate has a different ending in mind.

This is a book in a series, but the first one I have read from this author. I really enjoyed it.
