This was such a fun read. It's well illustrated, and the story is told in a clear and interesting way. I loved that Josie took on evil corporations and her parents in order to save the world. The focus on friendship and finding yourself was super sweet.

I did not have any strong positive or negative feelings regarding this book.
I thought the theme of this book was an important one with the theme being about the importance of finding yourself and then getting a choice over your life and choosing what you want to do and that no one (not even your parents) should be able to take away your free will.
Another positive about this book was Josie and Zoe's friendship. I love how even though Josie's story is a hard one to believe, Zoe didn't abandon her. Both of them looked out for each and supported each other. I also appreciate their protectiveness of each other.
There was no romance in this book and while I do appreciate a good w|w romance I am happy that we got to see an amazing ride or die friendship between two girls. Platonic relationships can be just as important as romantic relationships.
This is a good middle grade book and while it wasn't a favorite I found it be an enjoyable quick read with a good theme.

ARC Review: Received for free via NetGalley for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

CW/TW: mind control, lying, emotional abuse, manipulation, espionage, mention of spying, kidnapping, ableist slurs,

It's a meh from me.

I received an advanced reader copy of this graphic novel from NetGalley in exchange of this honest review.

UGHHHHH. This one is tough to review, without talking about spoilers! The provided description made it sound like something I could get behind, but the concept was poorly executed. I didn’t even enjoy the artwork – the colours were interesting, but I didn’t like how sloppy the faces appeared. 1 star out of 5, I simply did not like this!

J.B. is a pretty great kid, but so messed up. I didn’t like that the mom turns out to be so evil (can’t say to what extent because of spoilers). I also didn’t like who she works for because it makes no logical sense, nor is it clear what the motives behind the special ops J.B. has been forced to do are.

Instead of leaving me satisfied with at least an entertaining read, this left me wanting for more. What even happens to J.B.? What happens to her dad? What happens to her mother and to her mother’s employer? I am confused at this lack of ending, of closure.

The expected publication date for The Spy Who Raised Me is April 6th, 2021.

Thank you to Netgalley and publisher for a free copy of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review.
Oh am I ever torn on this one. On the one hand, JB was a kick ass kid.
On the other- her relationship with her mother leaves me feeling deeply unsettled.
The art style wasn't all that pleasing.
Unfortunately this didn't do it for me.

*An e-copy was given through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

As someone who grew up thinking being a spy would be really cool, I was very excited to read this. It follows J.B. who lived a very ordinary life but one day found out that she had the skills of a spy and that her mother was hiding a very big secret from her. The storyline was interesting, unlike anything I've read before.

It was fast-paced, though a little confusing at times, but also action-packed. As I kept reading, I became more disturbed by the many lies that J.B. grew up with, especially with how manipulative her mother was. The main character, being a somewhat 'programmed' child, had certain controls that could be voiced activated, such as "Halt and Obey". As if that wasn't messed up enough, there's a [slight spoiler] few frames in the book where it's being repeated over and over again [end spoiler]. I can't help but to wonder if this storyline had a deeper meaning behind it. However, other reviews explains it to be child abuse.

I didn't enjoy the art style. It just wasn't my thing. However, I can appreciate the monochromatic colours since that isn't easy at all to do. It also wasn't particularly memorable. While reading it, I took a break for a few weeks only to feel very confused as I couldn't remember what J.B. looked like. Now, as I am writing the review a week after finishing the book, I still can't remember most details of the book.

I still have many questions after finishing the book. Some are unanswered, some are just events in the book that I am very confused by. There were definitely many points from other review that made me realise there were a few plot holes which I didn't notice at all. Though I didn't change my ratings because of that, it's still an important point to note.

This book left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, it was interesting and different, not memorable for the most part but there were parts that left me with negative feelings and only those are the ones that are ingrained in my memory.
