I really loved the world of this, and Onyeka herself was such a strong protagonist! Unfortunatly though I think there was maybe a couple too many characters, and the way the plot was spread out and ended needs a revise. I wouldn't call how it ended a cliffhanger, it just felt unfinished and like someone ripped out some pages from the back of my book. I thought there was a lot left in the version I had, but it was just a long authors note, acknowledgements, and then an excerpt of book 2... really hate when publishers do that.
Onyeka was just such a compelling main character. She was strong, yes, but it felt believeable and not a "chosen one" situation at all. She also really just felt like a kid, I'm not sure why people are giving negative reviews based on an "unrealistic home life" and not believing Onyeka would just not know anything but like... it happens all the time with divorced parents, abandoned kids, etc? Kids don't want to believe the worst, and the remaining parent often doesn't want to make the other parent out to be a villain or something so lies are often told and believed.
The other characters were a mix though, Hassan and Adanna were the main 2 side characters that stood out to me and were memorable and the rest kinda merged together or I just forgot about until they popped up like Cheyenne. I'd have loved to read more of Cheyenne but she popped up just so infrequently and kind of at random that she was more of a memory in the book than an actual character despite being such a massive part of the first part of the book (before Onyeka goes to Nigeria).
Oh the world though, that world is fantastic! I've been consuming quite a bit of Nigerian content for a bit now and one of my favourite things is the beautiful mix of languages, and that comes across really strongly! Oh and that food, mmmm I got hungry while reading this for sure! Since it's also not mentioned at the start of the book (at least from what I can see/in my version), there is a glossery and language guide (for Pidgin English) in the back of the book next to the authors note! They're not massive, but I think they do a good enough job for anyone unfamiliar to any of it.
Though, I have no idea why it was set in 2025, it's a sci-fi but... a contempory sci-fi. Even though the book is a couple years old now, it's not that old aha..
The plot is a bit of an odd one, it feels like barely anything happens in this book, but at the same like too much is trying to be done. There's a whole tournament thing, a genetic mystery, character in-fighting, family drama and all sorts. Nothing really feels fleshed out too much (especially the tournament... why couldn't we have had more of that scene :'), and basically nothing is resolved by the end, it just opens up more questions.
I would still recommend it, but with a huge note of "this absolutely cannot be read on its own". I'm also super interested to learn more about the supposed movie that was meant to be being made. Not sure what happened to that, seems like it got announced in 2022 and then just.... never mentioned again sadly. Hopefully it's still in the works, it would make for a good film I think if done faithfully. Pacing would also fit a film much much better.

this was deeply predictable but still quite fun. I probably won't read the rest of the series, but still wouldn't say this was bad at all.

While I am too old to be the target audience of this book, I did really enjoy it. It was fun and Onyeka was a different sort of personality than I am used to reading in children's fantasy. I really liked her and her friends, and I liked the whole concept. I don't think I'd rush out to read the next one, just because it definitely reads as for children, but I also wouldn't be opposed if I happened across it.

Das Buch hat mir einerseits unglaublich gut gefallen und Onyeka mochte ich als Hauptfigur sehr gerne, andererseits hat es mich leider auch an einigen Stellen ziemlich frustriert zurückgelassen.
Das Setting hat mir sehr gefallen, und mit der Mischung der verschiedenen Sprachen und den Erwähnungen der ganzen Gerichte wirkte es sehr lebendig, wozu auch die ganzen unterschiedlichen Figuren beigetragen haben, die ich alle echt cool fand. Die Schule hat mir auch sehr gefallen, und ich konnte in dem Setting wirklich gut aufgehen und habe mich außerdem immer richtig gefreut, wann immer Onyeka irgendetwas gelungen ist, oder sie sich gefreut hat, ich konnte da sehr mit ihr mitfühlen.
Leider gab es aber auch Momente, in denen Figuren eher etwas flach wirkten, gerade Niyì wirkte auf mich manchmal sehr versteift und als wäre er eher ein Pappaufsteller als ein Mensch, und die ganzen Geheimnisse und wie damit umgegangen wurde haben mich auch eher frustriert. Ich verstehe total, warum die Geheimnisse sein mussten, und dass in einem solchen Setting Geheimnisse nötig sind, aber häufig hatte ich eher das Gefühl, dass Geheimnisse nur des Geheimnisses wegen da sind, als weil es wirklich Gründe dafür gegeben hätte. Zum Beispiel als Onyeka die eine Regel bricht, und alle darum sauer auf sie sind, aber gleichzeitig hätte das ja super verhindert werden können, wenn irgendwer zwei Sätze mehr zu ihr gesagt hätte, und klar gewesen wäre, dass andere Leute die Regel nicht brechen, aber das wird irgendwie im Buch nie aufgegriffen. Auch wird Onyeka für meinen Geschmack einfach zu schnell von allen beiseite geschoben, und ich hatte leider bis zum Ende das sehr starke Gefühl, dass sich in der Hinsicht nie so richtig etwas geändert hat, sondern Dinge wurden dann einfach vergessen und waren darum plötzlich wieder gut. Zwischenmenschlich hat es mir da einfach gefehlt, dass die Leute wirklich gelernt haben, miteinander umzugehen/mehr aufeinander zuzugehen, fürchte ich.
Die einzige Beziehung, bei der das für mich nicht der Fall war, waren Onyeka und Adanna, bei denen ich tatsächlich das Gefühl hatte, dass die beiden sich zueinander relativ realistisch entwickeln und es Gründe für die ganzen jeweiligen Handlungen gab.
Chey kam mir außerdem im ganzen Buch etwas zu kurz, weil sie irgendwie nur aufzutauchen schien, wenn man sie gerade brauchte, und dadurch die Freundschaft zwischen ihr und Onyeka für mich nie so richtig greifbar wurde, und leider war das Ende für mich zu vorhersehbar, als dass ich die Rätselei bis dorthin hätte genießen können, weil ich oft das Gefühl hatte, dass Figuren sich einfach nicht schlau genug anstellen, und sie Hinweise ignorieren/auch hier wieder ein wenig zu flach waren, um sich auf Situationen einstellen zu können.
Aber obwohl das jetzt sehr negativ klingt, hatte ich dennoch eine gute Zeit mit dem Buch und bin sehr froh, es gelesen zu haben. Es ist an vielen Stellen etwas schnell und manchmal fehlen mir zusammenhänge, aber das ändert nichts daran, dass ich die Figuren dennoch mochte, das Setting super war, und die Idee mit den Superkräften durch die Haare hat mir verdammt gut gefallen. Ich kann mir außerdem sehr gut vorstellen, dass ich es als Kind fantastisch gefunden hätte, und gerade als Band 1 einer Reihe (was ich anfangs leider nicht wusste), war es doch ziemlich solide. Inzwischen hat es für mich eindeutig seine Schwächen, die ich als Kind vielleicht nicht so gesehen hätte, aber Spaß gemacht hat die Geschichte trotzdem, und ich bin froh, das Buch zufällig entdeckt zu haben!
