This book is written in train of thought form, which can take a while to get used to. That is part of the reason for my 2 stars, the other is that it just wasn’t my bag. I love post apocalyptic stuff, but the meandering of the narrator wasn’t my bag.

A coworker handed this to me just before I left for a business trip for Japan and told me if I opened it on the plane, I wouldn't be able to put it down and would finish it before arriving. I was in. Now, the plane flight is 11 hours, so there is a lot of reading time in there. But in between sleeping, I read it the whole flight home, foregoing movies for the book. It's intriguing, painful, sweet, twisted...and you have no idea where the hell it is going to go. Something off the beaten path was a welcome book to end the summer with.

[Spoiler alert]
My one complaint is that it really just ends. I kept wondering where it was going...but it truly just ended. I wanted an understanding of how this world they were living in would be sustainable, if at all. And I think the depressing answer is that it is not.

I had such high hopes for this book and ended up being really disappointed. I made it almost all the way through before taking a sneak peek at the ending and realizing that there was no light at the end of the tunnel. what a sad, depressing book.

I really liked the post apocalyptic world Mr. Heller imagines in this book.
