This was such a crazy book and I loved every second. The plot got so much more intense with each chapter and I couldn’t put it down. The characters were a little flat, but they worked well together and actually allowed the horror aspects of the book to shine more.

I just couldn't fall in love with the monster. I wanted more, the atmosphere and set up was so good and then the last third just fell flat for me

I truly wanted to like this book way more than I actually did. I got really excited when I read the premise for this book. I have read a few other books with deep sea creatures that have been terrifying. So I was ready for a chill.

When Carrie had her first encounter with the creature it was a little scary. The environment changing the way it did with the creature's emotions was like a mood ring. However, unlike a mood ring, this one fights back when it turns "black". It will kill and destroy everything in its wake. Yet, despite the creature being scary, the rest of the story as a whole including the characters were subpar. I barely remembered their names. This book is not the stuff of nightmares. One author that can really make creatures terrifying is a favorite of mine, Mr. Jeremy Robinson.

What started out as a monster story quickly became one about an EVIL corporation. While Evil Corp was dealt with monster never was. Particularly boring, this book featured a cast of uninspiring characters that I couldn't care less about. The constant shoehorning of a romantic subplot was terrible. My second book from Mr. Keene I like it no better than the first and do not feel compelled to pursue any of his other writings. A shame really because people keep saying such great things.

My library due date was coming up, so I had to read this one fast. No pressure. Ha ha, get it?
I was mildly surprised to find this to be a monster story rather than the natural disaster I was promised. Like the whole thing hinges on a rift opening under the sea but that just becomes a background threat to the more pressing issue of there being A Creature™️. That's fine, just know you're not getting the ecological catastrophe you signed up for.
I was also mildly surprised about how few of the scares come from actually diving (it's there, certainly, just not as much as I thought!), considering that is a horrifying activity. I like to listen to caving & diving accidents on YouTube and that shit is spine-chilling even when they have all the equipment and nothing is chasing them. This is free-diving, so it's all on a breath hold. I would have loved more of that at the expense of less time with Shady Organization Inc.
Because of that, I don't even consider this horror, it's more of an action-adventure. This would be great for active fans of James Rollins; there's a bunch of chase scenes, scientific discoveries, betrayals, bad guys with guns. Oh and also a fucking pirates-style Kraken attack. It's not terribly deep (ha ha, get it?) or complex, just some decent turn-off-your-brain entertainment.

Ummm no! But I'll read all I can about it. Because stoopid.

Off the coast of Mauritius, something is going on with the gorgeous area that looks like an underground waterfall.

Something is taking over, turning the ocean very dark, cold, and the animal life is either leaving or disappearing.

World-champion free diver and marine biologist Carrie Anderson joins in the mix working to find out what is going on in the deep. The ocean floor is starting to collapse and a big bio-technical company is hiring her to go in to see if she can figure out why.

Frick that! I hate deep water. I'm okay just looking at it but like I heard on a video.."That's the shark's table." You can get your arse eaten or worse.

Now it didn't matter to me whether this book was completely believable or not, I gave no cares. It was perfect summer reading (to keep me away from the beach)..I ate this stuff up. It sent chills up my spine and reinforced my belief that unless you can see wear your foot is going..you just keep that sucker out of the water.

I think this was my first Brian Keene book and it looks like my friends like some of his other books better so I'm completely sold on him if this is one of his worst.

My fellow Netgalley junkie Michael is getting the blame for my nightmares on this one.
