For someone who doesn’t really read sci-fi, this was just fab (tbh it’s Matt Haig, are we surprised 😂)
This took a while to get into while how narrator got used to Earth, and I’m not overly mad about that because that could have been on purpose. It was so great to see them adjust and learn to humans, and there were some really funny moments. Like all Haig’s books, however, it also broke my heart several times and showed beauty and wonder in times of sadness.
I feel like I want to reread this, now that I know how this story is shaped, just to really dig deeper into Haig’s hidden messages.

What a unique and weird little book! Our main character is a Vonnadorian alien who was sent to Earth with a particular mission, tasked to him by “the hosts.” He is given Andrew Martin’s body (but not his mind) and must destroy the professor’s newest work and anyone who knows about it. But what happens when he starts to care for those he is meant to destroy? Haig shows how hard it can be just to be human. He gives the reader rules for making life a little better and tools to practice empathy and compassion. Maybe the aliens are already among us, and they just couldn’t resist being human.
