I loved this! I would've loved it even more if we hadn't gotten so much of Lash's POV, because I might have skimmed those pages a lot.. Hehe. Anyways... Still loved it.

AND TOHRMENT <33333333333

I also loved Blaylock & Qhuinn's parts (even though it bothers me that we get a thousands different POV's in every book except for book 6.5 in this series..). I really like them together, even if they're not together. Basically, I want them together. Lol. Even if they're both stubborn and stupid. JUST BE WITH EACH OTHER, DAMN IT!

I don’t even know where to start…. Let me just say that I loved this book! It is my fav of the series and Ward has definitely improved her style and her story telling abilities…. her editor however, did a poor job. There were a few grammatical errors as well as word repetition/misuse that should have been caught. I also cannot get over the fact that there was NO mention of Rehv being in attendance at the ceremony at the end of the book. Every other person was named (including the fact that the doggen were all lined up), but not a word about my man Rehv… considering his relationship with Xhex, it seems like an oversight. Also, there were some inconsistencies and flow issues for me - like Xhex practicing the alphabet, and a few minutes later being able to follow JM’s rant with no problem; or the fact that Lash really wasn’t much of an opponent at the end... just didn’t ring true.

I must say I do feel sad that this seems to be the end of the road in a way. All the main characters (mainly the Brothers) have their books and their stories are told - except for Tohr... love him. I know Payne & Manny are next, but it won’t be the same for me. I’m also kinda sad that JM and Tohr will never find out that JM is Darius reincarnated… Ward stated this in the May Yahoo Chat, I believe, so it’s a definite ‘no’.

On a positive note, I LOVED the book in its entirety and it deserved a 5 star rating. I got teary a few times near the end, and the exasperated noises I made along the way got me some sideways glances from my hubby… but he’s used to it.
The ending was great, and I love it when things converge to make a nice tidy picture… the Darius story was fantastic, and the tie in to the main storyline was my favourite part. The Muhrder story lacked something for me, but I was glad to see him make an appearance none the less. Without a doubt, being the Team Qhuay fan that I am, their story was the most frustrating, of course!!!! Come on!!!! It’s. Killing. Me.
And on the way to work, Adam Lambert’s “What do you want from me” was on the radio (which is Qhuinn singing to Blay)… before you way “nope”, give it a listen – I think Adam is a Team Qhuay fan… just sayin’. Qhuinn needs a swift kick in the pants as far as I’m concerned, and I cannot wait until the next book!!!!

UPDATED REVIEW 5/10/2022:
UPDATED RATING (3 STARS)

Re-reading after 12 years out. Woohoo.

So… yeah, John and Xhex. What to say about John and Xhex? Let’s start with my thoughts about them from the previous books. From the start I’ve never really understood these two together to be honest. I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for John and I’ve never like disliked Xhex, but together I just never understood them. John has always been sweet and soft spoken (pun not intended), whereas Xhex has always been hard around the edges. I always thought a softer more feminine female would be nice for John.

But that’s not what happened. So let’s look move on from my wishlist and look at the book as it happened.

First let’s talk about John. My sweet John has changed so much from the first books. He’s grown up and that’s cool, I get it. But there are some things about the male he’s become that I wasn’t a huge fan of. In the previous book and the beginning of this book he goes completely like numb. He shuts everyone out because of his pain and it broke my heart. Thankfully, he does heal from some of this and I’m grateful for that. It was so good to see the healing between him and Thor and even him and Zsadist having that heart-to-heart. But since that happened, his personality did do some changing in the process. He hardened up quite a bit as a result. Perhaps this change had to happen in order for him and Xhex to work as a couple, but it makes me sad that his personality had to change in order to be with her. He’s not all bad, but just harder around the edges and not as sweet as he started out.

Then there is Xhex. The main issue I have with her is that she’s basically a guy with boobs and a vagina. She talks and thinks like a guy and she’s even described as her features looking manly. I have a hard time relating to her because she’s always worrying about “chicking out” when she feels anything even remotely feminine. But…duh! She’s a chick! I don’t get what’s so bad about having feminine feelings. There are things I like about her. She’s loyal and strong but honestly she’s just too hardened of a female for me to relate to. I can’t count the number of times that we are told that she has a “man’s haircut” and the body of a man. I mean, why not just make John gay? If he’s going to be with a female, why can’t he just be with a female who is described as a female! Even if she is fit and has short hair, that’s not even the issue. It’s the fact that it is rammed into our brains by the way she’s described and the way she talks and thinks that she’s basically a man with boobs. And I’m sorry, but I just can’t relate to that.

I also would’ve liked a little more information about her background. We are never really told much about her time at the sympath colony or even with the humans who kidnapped her. And what about her family that adopted her? Were they so bad? They seemed pretty nice when we met them at her birth. I’m just so lost. We were given so little about her history, just enough to hint at it, but never fully revealed.

And if Xhex is this super badass sympath assassin then why didn’t she kill Lash at some point during her capture? I’m sure she could’ve found something to stab into his chest, even if it was just the spoon from her meal tray! Or why not use her sympath powers on him? Clearly they work on lessers after we are shown her doing one in that shot John. I’m not calling her weak for not killing him already. I’m calling bullshit. Because if she really is as badass as we are told she is, this chick would’ve found a way. I don’t buy that she didn’t.

So John and Xhex together as a couple are…okay. I mean they do have some decent connections and relating to one another. They get to know each other pretty well, which is saying a lot compared to some of the other couples (looking at you Phury/Cormia). They have great sex together too. But still…something just felt like it was missing. Maybe just that unspoken connection. Like we are TOLD they feel this intense thing for each other, but I couldn’t FEEL it. They just don’t seem like they fit together to me.

Also…and maybe this is just me, but it totally skeeves me out that Darius basically delivered Xhex as a baby AND named her. If John is supposed to be Darius reincarnated (which is strongly hinted at, although never confirmed in this book), then isn’t that just a little…weird? It feels weird and wrong to me.

Other things to note about the book:

- Blay and Quinn’s drama stole a bit of the show. Glad Blay FINALLY got a POV (first time), and it was interesting to watch these two (as usual).

- Lash’s slow and torturous demise, and subsequent abandonment by his Omega daddy couldn’t have been more fitting. Even the Omega didn’t want to deal with his ass anymore. Hahaha! But I liked how his final end came. John was good to Xhex for how that played out. He was a good villain to hate though, gotta say. A better villain than some of the previous Fore-Lessers.

- Interesting how Thor knows No’One from the WAY past. Looking forward to how that plays out in his book.

- Payne and Vishous sibling reunion was so awww. Loving it. Hoping for more convos between these two in her book.

- Vishous is still so protective of Butch. :( Those two would’ve been great together. Just saying. Love Jane, but Marissa can take a hike. Maybe Butch can just join in with V and Jane in a ménage and ditch Marissa altogether. :)

- Count me officially intrigued by Murdher. Wondering what’s his deal and when do we get to find out.

- I’m ready for Lassiter’s book like yesterday. But it’s not coming until 2023?!?! #sadface Lovers him.

- Would’ve loved more comic relief and lighter moments in this book like we got with Rhev’s book. Not happy that we didn’t get much of that or much of any of the Brothers at all. Mostly was John, Quinn, Blay, and Payne. Lots of (related) Darius flashbacks too. I miss glimpses of my guys!

Overall this was not my favorite. I don’t love John and Xhex. Happy for the sake of having a HEA for them, but not how I would’ve had it go down. Hoping the next one is better although it’s another vampire/human pairing which I don’t like in this world. Ugh. We’ll see…

ORIGINAL REVIEW (11/27/2010):
ORIGINAL RATING (4 STARS)

I'll be honest. At first, I wasn't sure what I'd think of this book. I've always liked John and the big secret that we know he's really Darius but THEY don't know. :) But, like a lot of others, I was never really a fan of Xhex. I just didn't really see sweet John Matthew with the hard-edged Xhex. I pictured him with a softer, more feminine type.

But this book absolutely changed my mind about her. I love her. She's awesome and I totally understand her more after this book. She also transformed a lot in this book. Ironically though, her transformation was also kind of the reason I was on edge between giving this a 4 or a 5. I loved how she changed and it was definitely needed in order for her and John to be together. She needed to come to terms with some things and soften up JUST A LITTLE in order to give room for John in her heart. But it almost seemed like too much, too fast. In the previous books she's portrayed as this extremely hardened, absolutely nothing can get through her shell, kind of woman. Although what happened with Lash would be extremely traumatizing for anyone, even someone made of stone, it seemed to soften her almost too much for belief. There were a few moments in this book where it didn't even sound like Xhex anymore. Although these moments of love and sensitivity on her part made me love her character more and had me rooting for her and John, they just didn't sound like her sometimes. Almost from the moment we first saw her in this book, she seemed like a totally different Xhex than the one we've seen prior.

But, aside from that, the moments between her and John were just so beautiful. Really, there was true love between them and it was so real. John is just too sweet for words and being inside Xhex's mind to hear what she thinks about him in return was surprising (in a good way). To hear how much tenderness and respect she had for him was priceless. The words "I love you" were on the forefront of both their minds the entire book, but it took a lot for them to express them to one another. It was so worth it though!

This book also had so much more going on than previous books. In previous books there would be maybe two different stories going on - one about the hero and heroine in their love-journey, and another about the lessers or something else of the sort. But this book literally had about SIX stories going on at once: Xhex/John, Lash/the lessers, past Darius/Thor, Payne, Qhuinn/Blay/Saxton, and the Paranormal TV show. I think that's all, phew, that's a lot! It was done well and it came together well, but it was a lot for one book, which is more than likely why it ended up so long.

The Paranormal TV show probably didn't need to be in there as much, if at all, although it did tie in at the end a little bit. But, I still think it could probably have been cut.

The Payne story is relevant since that's her next book. When V came in the room to her, it was so sweet and heartbreaking that they lost so much time as siblings. I'm excited to hear about her story because she's kind of like a more feminine Xhex. She talks feminine, has long hair and all, but she fights like a warrior. It should be interesting.

I was extremely surprised with how much I was intrigued by the Qhuinn/Blay story. I'm really not normally into reading a m/m relationship, but for them I was truly hoping for more! I want to find out what happens with them because it is so not over. There is way too much festering sexual and emotional tension for it to be over. I sort of hope they get their own book, but even if they get their HEA in the background of the other books, I'd be happy. I just hope they get it.

On a side note, how in the world can young Thor dematerialize with Darius? Isn't he pre-trans, which would make him essentially human at the time? If he's not pre-trans, that wouldn't make much sense either since in the previous books we've been told that he met Wellsie pre-trans and she was promised to him by her family for when he transitioned; but that he ended up loving her too. So I'm confused by all that.

Overall though, I loved the book. John and Xhex were so sweet (and might I say hot) together! I never thought I'd love this couple so much, but I truly do. Also how the sub-stories ended up tying together was really cool. I kind of predicted some of them, but it was still really neat to see them play out. Can't wait for Payne's story, Qhuinn/Blay's story, and I really hope that Thor gets a new HEA soon because he deserves it.

If you're a long time BDB reader, you would know that John Matthew has had a tough life and that doesn't really end with his own book. I was really looking forward to seeing John get his happy ending. 'Lover Mine' is definitely one of my favourites for this series. I loved seeing not only John's mind, but Xhex's too; and the action (both fighting and private time *wink**wink*) was amazing.

After finishing 'Lover Avenged' last week, I was desperate to jump into 'Lover Mine'. The previous book leaves us with a serious unresolved issue concerning Xhex and her future. I've become super attached to Xhex (it's really hard not to get that way); I never want to see her hurt again. I adored seeing her as more than just Rehv's security guard. I love her strength and her fears; she's not a gentle soul, but she's got good things going for her. The struggle to be accepted and to overcome her past is heart-warming.

We see relationships form and break in 'Lover Mine'; you can't help getting caught up in the drama, especially after so many books. The characters we follow are all so well known to us; they feel like friends. You don't want their actions to end up hurting someone you love *cough*QhuinnandBlay*cough* The unresolved issues only make me want to read the next book already.

I loved reading the flashback scenes about Darius and Tohr. If you haven't read the book yet, I'll tell you only one thing: There's more to these scenes than just seeing Darius again. I started to guess what they were about early on, and it wasn't hard to work out. They leave you feeling pretty satisfied in the end.

Despite loving this book, and despite how important it was to see everything that was happening, I cannot make myself enjoy the lessers POVS. Maybe I'm too desperate to find out about the Brothers and their females, but I don't find these scenes captivating enough, even with Lash being the main focus for 'Lover Mine' and with his story being so connected to John and Xhex's happen ending. It just doesn't interest me.
