Some moments shone but on the whole I did not care for this book. It may be that I don't care for "funny" essays.

There was a nice moment when describing Thanksgiving and family and the purpose of storytelling.

I’m not sure what rock I live under, but I am forever behind on pop culture. (Like, decades behind; as of just days ago I thought JJ Abrams was famous for directing the Titanic.) So—this being an essay collection heavy on internet references that go *way* over my head, which I did not realize going into it—I wasn’t sure I’d like it. But the chapters about family, friendships and all the relational aspects of life were so sincere that I really ended up enjoying this.

I might not recommend it to my fellow never-seen-Star-Wars, probably-don’t-know-who-sings-most-top-40-songs crowd (I think it’s probably better if you are someone who is Very Online). That said, R. Eric Thomas is an undeniably funny writer with a really tender take on hope and meaning-making. “Family doesn’t just happen; welcome isn’t a neutral state. We have to tend to these things.” (“Dinner Guests”)

This is a funny take on many things that felt like my life.. as if he was my invisible gay best friend from the south that grew up with in my small town in Minnesota...
