A book to break your heart a little, but that's Neil Gaiman, isn't it?

The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains by Neil Gaiman is a paranormal horror short story. I followed along in the physical book with illustrations by Eddie Campbell while listening to the audiobook, which is narrated by the author with the FourPlay String Quartet providing musical backup.

I highly recommend reading this book in that manner.

As this is a short story, I'll be as vague as possible on the synopsis: we follow two men walking through Scotland around the time of the Jacobite rebellion while exploring themes of family, grief, and the search for hidden treasure.

This really helped to scratch a folklore itch I had. Gaiman is very good at creating atmosphere, and I felt like I was walking in the mountains along with the characters. The illustrations heightened that vibe for me.

All in all, this is a wonderful short and enjoyable read for Spoopy Month.

I think I'm done reading Neil Gaiman's books; he's such a good storyteller that I'd rather listen to him read them to me. This tale of travel and darkness was clever and creepy, and I enjoyed the combination of Gaiman's narration and a string quartet.

I’m not sure what the point was supposed to be. Revenge I guess in the end?

A thoroughly fantastic Neil Gaiman experience. The interplay between the comic book panels of dialogue, the illustrations, and the prose made for a thoroughly engaging experience. Neil Gaiman and his collaborator crafted an engrossing, if brief, story of love, adventure, and revenge. Mr. Gaiman proves once again that he is a master at his craft of storytelling. Light fantasy elements lend an touch of the otherworld to the journey. Recommended to any fan of Neil Gaiman, fairy tales, and folk tales.
