oh my god!! every so often i find pieces of art that makes me feel so happy in ways that i find impossible to articulate. this book belongs in that very small list of special art. every story is written with such nonsencial, absurd images that are delivered with such an assured tone that its so easy to just go along with it all, even when it makes no real sense. theres such a love for the simple way words sound in a sentence together that brings out the humor and poignancy in this book. recently, ive been thinking a lot about art that unapologetically wont explain itself and i think theres a lot of power in the author choosing to hold meaning just for themselves

sure there are a few misses, and one story that felt a little triggering for me (youll know the one) but im still giving thsi 5 stars. beautiful beautiful book, benny should read this.

it's always cool when poets write fiction. maybe a lil too postmodern for my taste but might use to teach later in the semester

I didn't know what was going on at the time I read this, I wrote some notes but now I'm not sure what they all mean either. I think all you can do is look at the pictures and think about other pictures.

Some things it reminded me of:
- story about arsonist father kind of like Barn Burning by faulkner
- The Hortlak by Kelly link where zombies people come out of a canyon across from an all night convenience store. I don't remember why.
- opal one, opal two by tessa mellas (http://files.harpercollins.com/Mktg/ItBooks/FortyStories.pdf) generally abstract ideas of girls and mothers
- the one where her marriage to louis ck is ruined by seahorses reminded me of the poem from the government lake where napoleon and jesus are killed by a seahorse
- "There's a hole in the bucket" reminded me of the rock eaters by brenda peynado but idk why
- "motorman" - everything unusual reminds me of motorman

I read this cover to cover. I wanted to stop and never pick it up again, but I quickly became addicted. Very different style of writing to what I would usually read. I felt understood but also a bit disturbed. So many boiled eggs.
