Great art, though it is hard to tell some of the mice apart and there's not much background to them. Not as fully formed as Brian Jacques' Redwall series, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I absolutely don't want to degrade the wonderful and fantastical heroics of the characters at the heart of this tale by going into how cute everyone is, but just know that's a part of this thing—and it's a rich, delightful thing! Here is an inherently dangerous world universally understood for mice (snakes, crabs, etc) and it's layered with a sprawling medieval society that features totally new threats (treason, swordplay, etc). It's exhilarating in its swiftness of story and cavalier maneuvers—doing everything I can to not use the word "mouseketeer"—and it feels like a tiny piece of a massive whole, which is so very often grand for these kinds of tales (not tails), and also it's probably how mice tend to feel anyhow, right? God, they're cute. (Damnit!)

genre: fantasy

summary: in a medieval past, mouse guards protect their fellow mice by providing protection and safe passage through the hazardous areas between villages/settlements. It has been discovered that one of the mouse guard has turned traitor and has been using treachery and deceit to gain access to village plans. it is clear that an invasion is inevitable. A group of mouse guards search to find out who the traitor is and protect the village from attack.

my review: i really didn't like the pacing of this...some of it was spot on, while other parts seemed to drag out for too long and also it was hard for me to keep track of who was who...not a big fan

Mouse Guard:Fall 1152 is a graphic novel I'd highly recommend to fellow fans of the sort of fantasy sub-genre of "woodland creatures have quasi-medieval societies that are under attack by fellow woodland creatures". This graphic novel veers more toward a dark fantasy take on this sub-genre and has some focus on the world's politics. It's very plot focused, but the characters are strongly defined and interesting to follow through the plot. Additionally, the art is very beautiful and really gets across a sense of scale. These mice are very small in a very big, dangerous world and the art truly emphasizes that.
