I'm so excited to see where this goes! Really enjoying the beautiful art style, and really enjoying Kieron's ridiculous writing.

Once again, Kieron Gillen shows why he's my favourite comic book writer. I don't feel like I can say much about the comic yet, as the series is only really getting going, but what a start! The sales pitch of "Goth Jumanji" doesn't do it justice. There's bleakness in this book, the feeling of having to grow up and leave nerdy things behind. But there's hope too. Despite them bickering for most of the volume, I really got the sense of the warmth and friendship between our protagonists. Plenty of D&D references too, which made my nerdy heart happy. And that ending...I could see it coming, but still. Emotionally devastating. Can't wait to see where this story goes!

The art in this is just gorgeous too, there's some stunning whole page spreads that I just want to take out and frame and it really fits the fantastical worldbuilding.

I'm not sold on the art yet but the story is solid and intriguing. Anything that uses the word geas gets a bonus point from me! 👍🏻

Darker than my typical comic picks but it's a Gillen comic about Dungeons & Dragons so I willing to endure the murky depths. A compelling adventure begins..!

Die is a new series from Image Comics. The series follows a group of six people as they have some shockingly intense travels. It’s one part fantasy and one part horror (there’s something very disturbing about the things left unsaid).
If I’m being completely honest with you, there is a good chance that I would have skipped this series altogether (based on an assumption from the name) had I not spotted the creative team involved. Kieron Gillen does the writing while Stephanie Hans does the artworks. Kieron Gillen has quickly become one of my favorite comic writers (top ten, without a doubt) so I’m willing to follow him to any new project, regardless of how little I know about it.
The series didn’t start off the way I expected it to, but I think that’s a good thing. We start off with the six characters as teenagers, and then quickly watch time fly by as they continue to set the groundwork for the series.
It was oddly intense at times. They made fantastic use of the fear of the unknown – leaving as much unsaid as possible, knowing that it’d be creepier than anything we could come up with on our own.
I really like what I’ve seen so far. As somebody that enjoys roleplaying games, the concept shown of the original game (what little of it we saw) was really unique. But then there’s the slow buildup combined with the large jumps in time. I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like it before. I’m looking forward to the next issue!
