I didn’t love the narrator and I think it was generally just not my vibe. I don’t normally read YA books anymore, but was interested in this book. It just wasn’t for me.

Considering where I am at on my own deconstruction of weight and fatness, this book is hitting in all the wrong places. I realize you have to start out with some conflict in order to get to a resolution, but oh lord the hyperfixation on weight and body sizes just in the first two chapters is enough to make me unsettlingly uncomfortable.

This book was so CUTE. I'd recommend it to any teen. The lead character was spot on for teen angst and insecurity without being insufferable. The plot was believable AND highlighted healthy friendships, romantic relationships, and conflict resolution. The author also did a fantastic job of bringing the reader along with the lead character's romantic arc without it feeling voyeuristic.

It can be hard to have a mom that looks like a model and a best friend who is society's definition of perfection. But Charlie is trying to stay positive and look on the bright side, maybe she will just get that chance to shine. Fat Chance, Charlie Vega comments on societal pressures on female bodies and the constant struggle to have self love. Charlie Vega is warm, smart, and witty. She is bold, realistic and sympathetic; allowing for every reader to be able to find themselves in her story. The plot allows Charlie to have identity and not sole focus on one theme but allow her to be complex. Maldonado creates realistic relationships and allows for both the positive and negative aspects of those relationships be displayed. The mother daughter relationship is dynamic and real, allowing for Charlie and her mom to full embody the spaces and situations they are in.

I really enjoyed parts of this story, but in the end I wasn't blown away like I hoped I hoped.

Good story
This a good story about learning to love yourself and growing up. I feel it was a little slow in a few spots, but overall a good storyline with fascinating characters.
