The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak

Clever, silly and hilarious. Novak undoubtably proves that pictures aren't essential to a children's book as long as the material between the covers is fun and entertaining. The book's concept went over my 2-year-old's head as he is too young to fully appreciate it, but he got a kick out of the goofy words included and I had a blast reading it aloud. Every house with children who enjoy being read to needs a copy of this book!

This is a great book, but it's a little hit or miss at story time. Sometimes it falls completely flat; sometimes it elicits lots of giggles and engagement. I read it the same way both times, so I'd say that it really just depends on the kids. I do only recommend this for advanced story time readers. You have to be prepared to leave almost every shred of dignity you have at the door and fully give yourself to the silliness. The more over the top your performance, the better.

Hvis det barn du læser bogen op for ikke griner når du er færdig med denne her bog ... så er det dig der er en dårlig oplæser.

This made me laugh out loud in the book store. Too funny. It reminds me of We Are in a Book, when Elephant & Piggie delight in making the reader say the word banana. I know my students are going to love it.

This review originally appeared on my blog, Books Without Any Pictures:

The Book With No Pictures is an inherently silly book, even though (and perhaps because) it doesn’t contain any pictures. B.J. Novak tells the story through two distinct voices. The first is the text itself, which features onomatopoeia and absurd phrases such as “… and my head is made of blueberry pizza”. The text is bright, bold, and highly visual.

The entire point of the story is to make the grown-ups reading the book aloud to their children say ridiculous things. Interspersed throughout the book runs a commentary in a different font in which the grown-up reading the book groans and protests about being forced to say things that are utterly hilarious. It lends the book an air of mischief, as if the child is tricking the adult into performing against his will.

If you are a good sport and have young children, I’d definitely recommend it. It’s the kind of book that’s fun and helps remind even grown-ups not to take themselves too seriously.

Reading this book was possibly the most fun I've ever had during working hours. I missed out on the full effect due to being at work and not able to read some of the ridiculous things out loud. I really need to buy it and read it to one of my nieces.

Well worth the read!
