** spoiler alert ** this book was shaping up to be a five star until i got to the final act- girl c. i understand that the entire point of the book is for it to about how disgusting the true crime industry really is, but i am not a true crime girlie and just found girl c's story hard to read. it made me sick. ill sleep with the light on tonight because it was that unsettling.

the ending was phenomenal though. it wasnt a huge surprise as i had already suspected it as i had been alluded to what themes this novel was exploring, but still impeccably executed regardless.

At times I questioned whether this was a young adult book because of the basic writing style and teen characters, but the themes/language made clear that it was not. Although this is an innovative style of writing, I found the book to focus too long on the unlikeable main characters, who have little to no redeeming qualities. I almost didn’t care about the back stories of the characters as I was not connected to them in any way. I found that the references to real true crime and fanfics were uncomfortable and went on too long. I felt that the pace picked up towards the end of the book but maybe I was just rushing to finish it!

As someone who was a young girl on Tumblr in 2012 and in middle/high school in the 2010s, much of this book is familiar to me because of the online spaces I was tangential to at those times. Also, as a person who consumed true crime via podcasts and documentaries recently, this book has changed the way I consume true crime. This book has been eye-opening and really made me reflect on my own consumption of true crime as well as how our society engages with what is now an industry that profits off of retelling the oftentimes unsanctioned stories of peoples' real and very personal tragedies. I would recommend this book to everyone I know.
