Truly disappointing and underwhelming. The author isn't good at building or keeping tension, and everything just seems to.. happen. The author is also not good at creating a narrative or internal/interpersonal dialogue. There's no consistency or continuity anywhere to be found, except with the MMC being a possessive dickhole.
Everything is bouncing around and contradictory within every level: chapters, pages, paragraphs, and lines. There's either no lead-up to events so it feels like it comes out of left field, or something happens, then is forgotten about the next line. It's disorienting and makes it hard to keep up with the story, which is extra frustrating bcs there's no plot.
An example: in the first chapter, all we're told is that she's emotionally destroyed over her lost love, and then he immediately shows up. Jarring, but okay, get right into it I guess. Except she loses her resolve immediately for all of the following: talking to him; going out on a date with him; having sexy times with him; and finally, start seeing him again. This is an arc that’s repeated throughout literarily the entire book.
The one thing we know for certain going into this book is that is she's broken up over it but resolved to not go back there.. then she immediately goes back to him. There’s absolutely no tension, no suspense, no real fight. The entire time, she acts like the world will literally fall apart if he “doesn’t want her”. Why would I trust anything the author is trying to build if it's immediately thrown away like that? This immediate break in trust is consistently reinforced throughout the book. I don’t give a fuck about what happens during the book, bcs I’m not shown or told why I need to care. Why would I, when it’s going to be either forgotten about, contradicted, or glossed over in the next paragraph?
Aside from that, the characters are boring. FMC isn't a sub like the author is making her out to be; she's a meek epitome of a doormat. She has negative backbone, and can’t stand up for herself for shit. MMC is an abusive, possessive neanderthal, and not in a good or exciting way. He's like a parrot with how often and much he tries to "claim her", and it's gag-worthy how much she "needs it to feel free". Whatever the fuck that means.
This feels like a high schooler trying to (badly) write y/n fanfic. There's no plot, no character development, no variety in the smut. The twist isn't a twist. It's not surprising. It's not exciting.
