Another exceptional piece of historical fiction by Tracy Chevalier. Well researched time, places and culture with characters woven into the human conditions of the time. The storytelling is done mostly by the perspective of the main character with letters between chapters. The characters, their motivations and plight are thoughtful and relatable. I consumed this story which, similar to Chevalier’s other stories, has unexpected twists, and characters making tough decisions. If you’re an Ohioan who knows our local part of the Underground Railroad, or had family here in this time period, you may just see your family traditions in these stories.

Young girl goes to the US in 1850. Pioneering story. Quaker life and runaway slaves. Very very good. Recommended by Val s.

Interesting history but we found the book a little underwhelming.
Kirsten made us laugh using a Dorset accent for the main character’s words.

Found the "thee"s a bit odd thrown into normal grammar. Perhaps Quakers spoke differently. Underneath the soap opera plot there was an important message about how complicated slavery was. Sadly history is now questioning how the slaves were eventually freed and the following economic hardship they suffered once freed, which for many was initially worse than slavery. As this book shows the message is clear but the practicalities are hard. I liked the use of quilting to link in social differences.

I have liked all the TC books I've read, and this one did not disappoint. She does such a wonderful job of creating fiction around historical events. Honor Bright is another strong female character with a story you'll enjoy.

My mom and I read this book at the same time. I really enjoyed it, especially the insight into the Quaker community and beliefs. Interesting to read about slavery not set in the South, too.
