What a beautiful story of loss and grief. Reading the audiobook helped ne so much in overcoming my feelings of intimidation around verse in books.

Beautiful. I loved the audiobook, as I did with The Poet X - Elizabeth Acevedo’s  reading of her own words is just so exquisite, vivid and just full of so much inflection and color. I didn’t love the other narrator in this quite as much as Acevedo herself, but I did really love that there were two voices to highlight and differently shape the two POVs here. Anyway - the writing itself is so incredibly beautiful, with such complexity and layering; and what an amazing thing to read a fictionalized version of this huge tragic event that so many of us don’t know about. As with The Poet X, I love the detailing and care that Acevedo gives to the very specific voice and perspective of teenage girls - just really rare and special.

This was a lovely book. It's a story that centers largely around grief and the experience of losing a parent. It also explores the impact of long-kept secrets that emerge from a close death, and whether or not some secrets can be forgiven, even after death. This is the story of two teenage sisters, one who lives in the Dominican Republic while the other lives in New York. They lead entirely different lives, unaware of each other's existence, sharing only their father. However, when their father dies in a plane crash, both girls are faced with the grief and consequences of their father's death, and ultimately, his deception.

I liked that the book is told in a beautiful, poetic style, though I wish I had listened to it as an audiobook rather than in print format, as I know the poetry would have been more impactful that way. It was interesting to see the cultural differences of the girls, and how grief hit them in separate ways, and how, when they inevitably learned about each other, they dealt with their father's secret. Ultimately, I really enjoyed it.

Beautifully written, heartbreaking story about the aftermath of a father's long-standing deception of his two daughters coming out. Acevedo's prose is so impactful. I loved hearing from both girl's perspective in their very different homes.
